For years, career guidance in India has largely revolved around engineering, medicine, management and law. While these professions continue to attract millions of students, those interested in public policy, sustainability, social entrepreneurship and community development have often struggled to find structured pathways into meaningful careers. Recognizing this gap early on, Sauraveswar Sen founded Catalyst Learning Services in 2011 with a vision of helping young people build careers dedicated to solving society’s most pressing challenges.
In an exclusive interview with The Logical Indian, Sen shares how an unconventional career shift from engineering to education led him to establish one of India’s pioneering career accelerators for the social impact sector. Today, Catalyst mentors aspiring professionals in public policy, governance, climate action, ESG, CSR and sustainable development, preparing them to create meaningful change beyond traditional employment.

From Engineering To Purpose-Driven Education
Sen began his professional journey as a Design Engineer with Mettler Toledo Inc. However, while teaching students preparing for examinations such as the GRE, GMAT, IELTS, CAT and CLAT, he noticed a significant imbalance. Students from engineering and commerce backgrounds had clear career roadmaps, whereas those studying humanities and social sciences often lacked guidance despite their potential to address complex social issues.

This realisation inspired him to leave a conventional engineering career at the age of 23 and establish Catalyst Learning Services. His goal was simple yet ambitious to prepare future human service professionals capable of addressing poverty, inequality, climate change, governance and sustainable development through quality education and mentorship.
Building Changemakers, Not Just Job Seekers
Unlike conventional coaching institutions, Catalyst believes education should produce changemakers rather than merely helping students secure jobs. As Founder, Sen leads curriculum development, mentoring, institutional collaborations and career guidance while ensuring students gain practical exposure through experiential learning.
Over the years, Catalyst has partnered with organisations on initiatives ranging from civic responsibility and waste management campaigns to child protection awareness, anti-human trafficking programmes and field immersions with indigenous women entrepreneurs. These experiences enable students to understand social realities first-hand while developing empathy alongside professional skills.

Creating Opportunities In Emerging Careers
As sustainability, climate resilience and ESG become central to global development, Sen believes education must continuously evolve. Catalyst has integrated climate action and sustainability into its programmes, preparing students for careers in the green economy, public policy and social innovation.
The organisation’s work extends well beyond student mentoring. Since becoming a Visiting Faculty member at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in 2018, Sen has contributed to academic programmes across multiple campuses while collaborating with universities, governments, NGOs and corporate organisations. Catalyst has also organised Social Innovators Meets, Social Entrepreneurship Colloquiums and supported international collaborations such as the TISS Macquarie University Dual Master’s Programme.
Impact Beyond The Classroom
Catalyst’s impact is reflected not only in academic success but also in the careers its learners pursue. The organisation has mentored more than 1,400 aspirants, with nearly 90 per cent of them being women, helping them secure opportunities in fellowships, research institutions, development organisations, CSR teams, government programmes and international agencies.
Many alumni now work with organisations such as the United Nations, UNICEF, WHO and sustainability consulting firms, while others have established social enterprises addressing healthcare, mental health, waste management and community development. Their work demonstrates how education can create ripple effects that extend far beyond individual careers.

Catalyst has also invested in strengthening the education ecosystem itself by conducting faculty development workshops for more than 800 school teachers across several Indian cities, enabling educators to introduce students to emerging careers in sustainability and social impact.
Post mentorship at Catalyst, aspirants have secured impactful roles across the social impact ecosystem with starting salaries ranging from INR 5 lakh to INR 23 lakh. The organisation’s mentorship, advisory and consulting ecosystem has also enabled the creation of social startups and enterprises in mental healthcare, waste management, livelihoods, renewable energy and AI-enabled grassroots innovation.
Changing Perceptions Remains The Biggest Challenge
Despite growing opportunities in development and sustainability, Sen believes one of the biggest challenges is changing public perception. Many still consider careers in social development secondary to traditional professions.
He also highlights the need for educational institutions to keep pace with rapidly changing sectors such as artificial intelligence, climate resilience and ESG. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Catalyst adapted by introducing hybrid mentoring, personalised counselling and self-paced learning resources, ensuring students continued to receive guidance despite widespread disruptions.

Looking Ahead
Sen envisions Catalyst Learning Services becoming a global knowledge institution for social entrepreneurship, public policy and climate action. He hopes to expand collaborations with universities, governments and international organisations while embedding climate literacy and sustainability into mainstream education.
He believes that as artificial intelligence transforms the future of work, uniquely human qualities such as empathy, creativity, leadership and systems thinking will become increasingly valuable. Through Catalyst, he hopes to nurture professionals equipped not only with knowledge but also with the purpose and compassion needed to build a more inclusive and sustainable society.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Sauraveswar Sen’s journey challenges the conventional definition of career success. Instead of pursuing a predictable path in engineering, he chose to invest in people who aspire to solve society’s biggest problems. In doing so, he has helped create a generation of professionals working across public policy, sustainability, governance and social entrepreneurship.
At a time when India needs innovative solutions to climate change, inequality and social development, Catalyst Learning Services demonstrates that education can be much more than a pathway to employment it can become a powerful force for nation-building. Sen’s story reminds us that true success is measured not only by the careers we build but also by the lives we empower and the communities we transform.
