Jigmet Nurzin Angmo, a 27-year-old from Leh, is a beacon of change in Ladakh. Driven by a deep compassion for animals, she founded the Semchan Welfare Society, a sanctuary that provides a safe haven for over 170 stray and abandoned dogs. Nurzin and her dedicated team rescue, treat, sterilize, and feed hundreds of dogs, tackling the growing stray dog population in Leh with innovative solutions and unwavering dedication.

With vital support and guidance from Deena Talbot, a retired American dog trainer, Semchan has evolved into a well-structured organisation, significantly impacting the local community’s attitudes towards animals and fostering a culture of peaceful coexistence.

A Sanctuary in the Himalayas: From Barren Land to a Loving Home

Semchan Welfare Society’s rescue shelter is a testament to dedication and resourcefulness. Situated on land rented from the Sankar Gompa monastery, the one-acre space has been transformed into a haven for vulnerable animals. Eight dedicated workers manage the daily operations, from rescuing injured dogs off the streets of Leh to providing them with essential medical care and nourishment. The shelter itself is divided into eight carefully managed pens, each designed to cater to the specific needs of its residents. “Our rescue service has become pretty well-known in Leh,” explains Nurzin.

“Local people call our team whenever an animal is in distress. Our team uses careful and compassionate capture methods… We never use nets or ropes which can frighten them. Then we take the dog to the government veterinary hospital for examination and/or treatment”. The shelter houses dogs that are unlikely to survive on their own, while others, once recovered, are carefully released back into familiar territories, ensuring they have the best possible chance at a safe life.

From a Single Act of Kindness to Community Transformation

The story of Semchan Welfare Society began with a single act of kindness. Four years ago, Nurzin witnessed firsthand the suffering of street dogs in Leh, often neglected and injured. Inspired to take action, she used her savings to provide veterinary care for one particularly vulnerable dog. This initial act of compassion sparked a movement, evolving into a winter feeding program that quickly garnered support from fellow animal lovers in the community.

A pivotal moment arrived with the chance meeting of Deena Talbot, a retired American dog trainer, whose expertise transformed Semchan’s operations. With Deena’s guidance, Semchan implemented structured record-keeping, improved medical protocols, and provided comprehensive training for its staff, solidifying its position as a leading animal welfare organisation in Ladakh.

Empowering Ladakh: Changing Perspectives, Saving Lives, and Building Bridges

Beyond rescuing individual animals, Semchan Welfare Society is actively reshaping community attitudes towards stray dogs. Through educational initiatives, promotion of responsible pet ownership, and consistent demonstration of humane treatment, Semchan is fostering a more compassionate and empathetic community.

As Nurzin notes, “It’s amazing to see how much local attitudes have changed. We regularly receive calls from people reporting injured or abandoned dogs, it’s such a change from the fear and apathy there once was.” This shift signifies a growing understanding and willingness to participate in animal welfare, creating a more harmonious environment for both humans and animals in Ladakh.

Challenges and Triumphs

Semchan faces numerous challenges, particularly during the harsh winter months when food scarcity and freezing temperatures threaten the lives of countless stray dogs. The team works tirelessly to maintain its extensive feeding program, providing nourishment to hundreds of animals across Leh. However, the organisation also grapples with the sensitive issue of mass feeding, which can be contentious within the animal welfare community.

While some experts express concerns about the potential downsides of mass feeding, Semchan remains committed to providing essential care and sustenance to vulnerable animals, adapting its approach to balance the needs of the dogs with the long-term goals of responsible population management.

How can we all support such grassroots efforts to inspire similar change in our own communities, cultivating a culture of respect, empathy, and unwavering compassion for all living beings?
