On Thursday, March 19, 2026, the Patna High Court granted regular bail to JD(U) MLA Anant Singh in connection with the October 2025 murder of 75-year-old Dularchand Yadav, a supporter of the Jan Suraaj Party. Singh was arrested on November 1, 2025, after a violent clash broke out between rival campaign convoys in Mokama’s Tartar village.

Despite contesting the election from behind bars, Singh won the Mokama seat by a margin of 28,206 votes. The High Court’s decision followed a critical post-mortem report which indicated that while the victim had a gunshot wound in his leg, the primary cause of death was cardiorespiratory failure resulting from blunt force trauma to the heart and lungs.

Medical Evidence and Legal Stipulations

Justice Rudra Prakash Mishra allowed the bail plea on a bond of ₹15,000, setting strict conditions that Singh must not intimidate witnesses or tamper with evidence. Defense counsel Naresh Dixit successfully argued that the single bullet wound to Yadav’s ankle a non-vital part did not cause his death.

This was supported by the findings of Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar, who confirmed that “the primary cause was determined to be cardiac and respiratory failure.” The prosecution alleged that after being shot, Yadav was run over by a vehicle. but the court took into account the medical evidence and Singh’s strong local political roots.

The bail decision also highlighted the court’s careful consideration of procedural law under Section 437 of the CrPC, balancing the accused’s right to liberty with ongoing investigation needs.

The judicial scrutiny also led to the suspension of two Station House Officers (SHOs) from the Ghoswari and Bhadaur police stations for failing to prevent the escalation of violence during the high-stakes campaign.

A Legacy of Strongman Politics

The incident in Mokama highlights the region’s long history of “Bahubali” (strongman) politics, characterized by a decades-old rivalry between Anant Singh and Surajbhan Singh. Dularchand Yadav, once a close aide to Lalu Prasad Yadav and an influential local figure, was campaigning for Jan Suraaj candidate Piyush Priyadarshi when the fatal clash occurred.

Anant Singh’s political resilience remains notable; even after a 2022 UAPA conviction which led to his disqualification before he was eventually acquitted his family has maintained its grip on Mokama since 1990.

Singh recently appeared in the Bihar Assembly on March 16 to cast his vote in the Rajya Sabha elections, where he touched Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s feet and confidently predicted his imminent release.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The granting of bail is a procedural step in our legal system, yet the circumstances surrounding this case reflect a deeply concerning trend of electoral violence. At The Logical Indian, we believe that the sanctity of a democracy is measured by the safety of its most humble participants the grassroots workers and elderly supporters like Dularchand Yadav.

When political disagreements transition from dialogue to physical confrontation, the very foundation of coexistence is shaken. While the courts will eventually decide on the guilt of those involved, the broader society must demand a shift away from “muscle power.” Politics should be a platform for service and empathy, not a theatre for territorial dominance and bloodshed.
