Padma Shri awardee Dr K S Rajanna, a Karnataka-based disability rights activist, entrepreneur, and former State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, is being widely celebrated for transforming personal adversity into decades of social service.
Rajanna lost his hands and feet to polio at the age of 11, but went on to represent India in para sports, establish employment initiatives for persons with disabilities, and advocate for inclusive governance.
His story regained national attention after videos from the 2024 Padma Awards ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan went viral on social media, with many praising his resilience and dignity.
Karnataka leaders, disability rights groups, and social media users hailed his contributions, while the Union government recognised his work with the Padma Shri for empowering marginalised communities through employment, advocacy, and accessibility initiatives.

From Struggle To Service
Born in Karnataka’s Mandya district in 1959, Dr Rajanna overcame severe physical challenges in an era with limited support systems for persons with disabilities.
Despite losing functional use of his limbs due to polio, he completed a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and later emerged as an international para athlete, winning medals in discus throw and swimming while representing India.
In 1980, he founded Shine Disabled Industries to create livelihood opportunities and vocational training for differently-abled individuals.
According to government citations and public statements shared during the Padma Awards, Rajanna consistently advocated for dignity over sympathy, arguing that persons with disabilities require equal opportunities rather than charity.
In 2013, the Karnataka government appointed him as the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, making him the first differently-abled person to hold the post in the state.
Officials and activists have since credited him with strengthening rehabilitation services and pushing for more inclusive welfare policies.
From Viral Moment To Legacy
Dr Rajanna’s inspiring journey drew widespread attention again in May 2024 after videos from the Padma Shri ceremony circulated across X, Instagram, YouTube, and other platforms.
Many users applauded a moment where he politely declined physical assistance while approaching the stage, calling it a powerful symbol of independence and self-respect.
Public figures, including Karnataka leaders and Members of Parliament, praised his achievements and described him as a role model for resilience and inclusive social change.
Beyond recognition, Rajanna’s work has focused on creating employment, improving accessibility, supporting skill development, and challenging stereotypes surrounding disability in India.
His initiatives have reportedly helped hundreds of persons with disabilities gain financial independence and social confidence, reinforcing broader conversations around accessibility and equal rights.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Dr K S Rajanna’s journey is a reminder that inclusion must move beyond symbolic praise and become a societal commitment rooted in accessibility, equal opportunity, and dignity. His life challenges deeply ingrained assumptions about disability and highlights how resilience, when supported by inclusive systems, can transform not only individual lives but entire communities. Stories like his also underline the importance of recognising persons with disabilities as leaders, innovators, and changemakers rather than passive recipients of welfare.
