At least 15 people were killed and around 20 others injured after a passenger bus rolled down a hill near Kagort village in the Ramnagar area of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning. Officials said the accident occurred around 10 am while the bus was negotiating a blind curve on the hilly Ramnagar–Udhampur road.
Local residents rushed to the site and began rescuing trapped passengers before police and emergency teams arrived. Authorities confirmed that 15 bodies were recovered from the wreckage and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with several reported to be in serious condition.
Union minister Jitendra Singh said he had spoken to district officials and that rescue operations were underway, with arrangements being made to airlift critically injured passengers for urgent medical care.
Locals Lead Bus Rescue Efforts
The tragic accident unfolded near Kagort village in the Ramnagar area of Udhampur district when the bus reportedly lost control while taking a sharp blind curve along a winding hill road. According to officials, the vehicle veered off the road and rolled down a steep hillside, leaving passengers trapped inside the mangled wreckage.
Residents living nearby were the first to respond, rushing to the scene and helping pull injured passengers from the bus before emergency teams reached the spot. Police personnel and rescue workers later joined the effort, evacuating victims and clearing debris from the accident site.
Authorities confirmed that 15 people had died in the crash and around 20 others sustained injuries, many of them serious. The injured were immediately shifted to hospitals for treatment, and some were referred for advanced medical care due to the severity of their injuries.
Union minister Jitendra Singh, who represents the region in Parliament, said he had contacted local authorities shortly after the incident. In a post on X, he said he had spoken with Udhampur Deputy Commissioner Minga Sherpa and confirmed that immediate rescue efforts had been launched.
“The rescue operation has been immediately undertaken. Heavy casualties are expected. All possible assistance is being provided,” Singh said, adding that arrangements were being made to shift the injured for medical treatment and to airlift those in critical condition if necessary. He also said he remained in constant touch with the district administration and local teams assisting in the rescue operation.
Authorities Probe Cause Of Crash
Officials said the bus was operating as a public transport vehicle and was travelling from a remote village towards Udhampur town when the accident occurred. The road connecting Ramnagar to Udhampur passes through mountainous terrain and includes several sharp bends and narrow stretches, which often make travel challenging for vehicles.
While the exact cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed, authorities are expected to investigate multiple factors, including the possibility of driver error, mechanical failure, or difficult road conditions. Initial reports indicate that the vehicle lost balance while navigating a blind curve, causing it to plunge down the slope.
Rescue teams continued to search the accident site for survivors and ensure that all passengers had been accounted for. Officials said the injured were transported to nearby hospitals where doctors were providing emergency treatment. Some victims were reportedly in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could rise as medical teams worked to stabilise the injured.
Authorities also began coordinating relief measures for the affected families while collecting details about the passengers on board. As investigations proceed, more information is expected regarding the circumstances that led to the crash and the safety conditions on the route where the accident occurred.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Road accidents in mountainous regions remain a persistent concern in India, where narrow roads, blind curves, and difficult terrain can quickly turn routine journeys into life-threatening situations. While immediate rescue operations and swift medical assistance are critical in saving lives, tragedies like the one in Udhampur also underline the urgent need for stronger road safety measures, better maintenance of transport vehicles, and improved infrastructure in remote areas.
The rapid response of local residents who rushed to rescue passengers even before emergency teams arrived reflects the compassion and solidarity that communities often show in times of crisis. However, preventing such disasters requires long-term solutions, including safer road engineering, stricter transport regulation, and greater awareness about responsible driving in hilly terrain.
