In Telangana’s Medak district, over 400 students were trapped inside the SC Women’s Degree College hostel and SC & ST Welfare hostels following sudden severe flooding caused by unprecedented heavy rains on August 26-27, 2025.

The Telangana State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire department, and local police swiftly launched rescue operations, rescuing more than 350 students so far using boats and other emergency measures, with efforts ongoing to evacuate all stranded students safely.

Officials reported no casualties among the rescued students, while rescue work continues for others trapped in different flood-affected locations across Medak and neighbouring districts. The state administration is committed to restoring normalcy amid heavy rains and floodwaters disrupting infrastructure and communication lines.

Massive Rescue In Response to Record Rainfall

The flooding in Medak and surrounding Kamareddy district was triggered by extraordinary rainfall, with some areas receiving over 40 centimetres within 24 hours, overwhelming local water bodies, canals, and drainage systems.

The sudden rise in water levels breached multiple tanks and canals, inundating low-lying zones including the hostels where students were staying. The SC Women’s Degree College hostel in Ramayampet town became one of the focal points of the rescue, with 350 girl students evacuated safely by the Ramayampet fire station team.

Another 80 students from the SC & ST Welfare Hostel in the same area were also rescued. Local eyewitnesses described tense scenes of students stranded on upper floors awaiting rescue amid power and water supply cuts.

Fire Services Director-General Y Nagi Reddy said, “Our teams in coordination with SDRF, NDRF, local police and volunteers are ensuring all safety protocols in evacuations to avoid any casualty.”

Besides students, 150 more people are reported rescued from other flood-affected villages, with continuous monitoring and rescue efforts deployed through 12 SDRF and four NDRF teams.

Context: Severe Flooding Across North Telangana

The recent heavy rains have affected not only Medak but also Kamareddy, Rajanna Sircilla, Jagtial, and Nirmal districts in north Telangana. Over 800 individuals have been rescued from flood waters, which submerged roads, hampered rail connectivity with washed-away tracks, and disrupted traffic on key highways.

In Medak, specific areas such as Doopsingh Thanda village faced complete isolation due to flooding, forcing evacuations and ongoing search efforts for stranded residents, including villagers on rooftops and an ambulance stuck with a pregnant woman rescued by SDRF amidst breached road connectivity.

Authorities have warned of further emergency measures as water levels remain high, requesting helicopter assistance for trapped individuals in remote locations.

The scale of the flooding has exposed vulnerabilities in regional infrastructure and the urgent necessity to bolster disaster preparedness and climate resilience plans for Telangana’s flood-prone zones.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The determination and efficiency displayed by Telangana’s emergency teams and community volunteers in rescuing hundreds of students and residents underline the power of collective action in crises. However, the recurring nature of extreme weather events necessitates a deeper, systemic overhaul from robust flood management infrastructure to comprehensive community education on disaster response.

The Logical Indian advocates that protecting vulnerable groups, especially children in residential institutions, must be a priority in government policies, augmented by active community engagement rooted in empathy and solidarity.
