Who is Harjit Singh Sajjan?
Harjit Singh Sajjan, a sikh-canadian is the newly appointed Defense Minister of Canada. He is a Canadian Liberal politician elected from Vancouver South defeating the conservative politician Wai Young. Harjit Singh migrated from Punjab when he was five years old. He went on to serve in Vancouver police department and subsequently enlisted in the Army primary reserve. He went on to serve in Bosnia and Afghanistan. It is worthwhile noting that he was the first sikh to command a Canadian army regiment.

Justin Trudeau trumps Donald Trump
Mr Harjit Singh Sajjan’s exemplary service to Canada & more importantly having won the trust of fellow Canadians in winning the election are not the only reason for his appointment as Defense Minister. Justin Trudeau’s liberal values is perhaps the most important reason why we are proud to see a former Indian national in position of high responsibility. In the light of recent anti-immigration rhetoric from election campaign happening across the border in United States (Donald Trump), the ramifications of this appointment is three fold
1.) It puts a clear message to all native Canadian’s that a Sikh immigrant from India is as much Canadian as the rest are.
2.) It sends a clear message to the immigrants, that they are welcome to Canada besides ensuring immigrant nationals will be considered as Canadian’s first irrespective of their place of origin and religion.
3.) It creates a positive vibe in the society where native’s and immigrants gain trust each other and also inspires and speed’s up the process of assimilation of immigrant’s into Canadian society.

We are proud yet we have something to look up to
We are extremely happy and proud of Mr Harjit Singh Sajjan for his accomplishment. However we have to ask ourselves, when will the day come that we make a Canadian or any foreign national proud by creating a framework and atmosphere where a foreign immigrant could aspire to reach any levels in India. Are we there yet? Probably not but perhaps in the future. Few more Harjit Singh could inspire India and the world .

TLI salutes Mr Harjit Singh and his perseverance in achieving this. We share the joy and pride his wonderful family must be having at this moment. We wish Mr Harjit Singh all the very best in his new role and hopefully he will in inspire many more Harjit’s across the world. They say “Singh is King” one can’t agree more.
