69 Years of Independence
Independence day is fast approaching. Historically, no day can be of more importance than this day. The mighty British Empire was overthrown and democracy was established which paved the way for the people of India to charter its own course for the future. The story of Indian independence is all we have to look back at to know and understand the value systems on which India was born. One of the most important factors which enabled the ouster of British was “Unity”.

Gujarat example: Vasant-Rajab Memorial’
There was a memorial built in Gujarat which Ms Anandiben Patel inaugurated. It was called as the Vasant-Rajab Friendship Memorial situated on the premises of city crime branch office in Gaekwad Haveli area. Vasantrao Hegishte, a Hindu, and his Muslim friend Rajabali Lakhani, both were freedom fighters who lost their lives while trying to stop communal riots during the 1946 rath yatra. Ms Anandiben Patel not only highlighted how important unity is for the cause of development of Gujarat but also called on people to follow the example set by Vasant & Rajab.

Historic victory
There are many instances from 1857 where people came together for a common cause, i.e. to oust the British. Indian freedom fighters could never look through the prism of religion, caste and geography. The common cause i.e nation’s freedom was all what they strove for. If unity was found lacking one could be sure that such a historic victory would not have been achieved.

Our next freedom struggle
It is evident that when people unite, there is no challenge that can’t be overcome. What are the challenges we face today? Reaching education to the masses, ensuring health care is affordable to all, elimination of poverty, social justice for the oppressed and many more. Overcoming these challenges should be our next freedom struggle, and as history suggests we can surely overcome these challenges if people can shed their differences and unite for the cause and challenges which the nation is going through.

We owe it to our founding fathers
We owe our freedom to the sacrifices and unity exhibited by our freedom fighters. The best way we can celebrate this Independence Day to unite and fight for finding solutions to the challenges faced by the society. Even as we celebrate this Independence Day, let us unite and prepare ourselves to take on the issues and challenges which our country faces today and pave the way for a better future.
