The Government Should Show The Political Will And Strike Hard On Corruption: Dr Jayaprakash Narayan

Amidst big debates on whether or not the recently implemented demonetisation policy will be able to end corruption and black money problems in India, Dr Jayaprakash Narayan, the founder and president of Lok Satta Party, analysed the crisis and mentioned some solutions on how corruption can be curbed.

He said in a recently released video that it is not demonetisation, but different measures that have to be implemented to stop corruption. Demonetisation may bring about a fear of cash transactions among those following corrupt practices, but they might just electronically transfer their unaccounted money to friends and relatives living abroad.

Dr Narayan suggests identifying some 1,000 people from various departments of the government who are corrupt and to retire them.

He also evokes the implementation of the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (SAFEMA) Act of 1976, which ensures extremely coercive action against smugglers and foreign exchange manipulators and allows for confiscation of all their properties and assets. Such measures, if taken, would set strong examples in the country and would also deter others from engaging in corrupt practices.

He also urges the government to create a practical, competitive, not corrupt decision-making procedure.

Dr Narayan believes that only such strong mechanisms will be able to address the grave problem of corruption thriving in the country.

The Logical Indian supports Dr Narayan’s argument that it’s time to bring about harsh measures to control the problem of corruption. Demonetisation may not be the only solution, as recently two Gujarat officers were found taking bribe of Rs 2.9 lakh, all of which was in new currency notes.
