In response to heightened tensions and misinformation following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Indian government has launched Operation Sindoor, a comprehensive cyber safety initiative. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a set of detailed dos and don’ts for internet users across India, aiming to curb the spread of fake news, protect national security, and promote responsible digital behaviour.

Top officials, including Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, have emphasised the importance of digital vigilance as both nations remain on high alert, with India targeting only identified military objectives and urging citizens to play their part in maintaining peace and security online.

Digital Vigilance Amid Conflict: Government’s Advisory

The recent escalation between India and Pakistan, marked by missile strikes and drone attacks, has been accompanied by a surge in online misinformation, including deepfakes and impersonation of official accounts. In this climate, MeitY has released a clear advisory for internet users, highlighting the crucial role of digital citizens in national security.

“Pakistani claims continue to be heavy on lies, misinformation, and propaganda,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, urging the public to rely only on official sources for updates. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi echoed these sentiments, stating, “Every citizen’s online actions matter in safeguarding the nation’s interests during such sensitive times.” The government’s message is clear: responsible digital conduct is as important as physical security measures.

Operation Sindoor: Dos and Don’ts for Internet Users

To empower citizens and prevent the spread of harmful content, MeitY has outlined the following dos and don’ts:

Dos:

  • Verify Information: Always cross-check news, especially regarding military operations or national security, with official government sources before sharing.
  • Report Misinformation: If you encounter suspicious or fake news, report it immediately via WhatsApp at 8799711259 or email at socialmedia@pib.gov.in.
  • Stay Cyber-Safe: Be alert to phishing attempts, avoid clicking on unknown links, and refrain from downloading files from untrusted sources.
  • Maintain Digital Hygiene: Regularly update passwords, use two-factor authentication, and ensure your devices have the latest security patches.
  • Promote Positivity: Use your online presence to spread messages of peace, unity, and factual information, helping to counteract divisive narratives.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t Share Unverified Content: Refrain from posting or forwarding information about troop movements, military actions, or emergency measures unless confirmed by authorities.
  • Avoid Incendiary Content: Do not share or amplify posts that could incite communal tensions, violence, or panic.
  • Don’t Engage with Propaganda: Stay clear of content that appears to be propaganda, fake news, or AI-generated misinformation, especially from suspicious or foreign sources.
  • No Impersonation: Never create or interact with fake profiles pretending to be official government or military accounts.
  • Don’t Consume Banned Content: Avoid accessing or sharing Pakistan-origin content, as per government directives to OTT platforms and digital services.

Emergency Measures and Wider Impact

The fallout from Operation Sindoor has led to heightened emergency preparedness across the country. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed all government hospitals to set up fully equipped emergency wards and ensure adequate staffing and medical supplies.

The Kartarpur Sahib Corridor has been suspended, affecting cross-border religious travel and highlighting the broader impact of the conflict on civilians. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting’s order to OTT platforms to remove Pakistan-origin content is a further step to prevent the dissemination of hostile narratives. Officials reaffirm that India’s military actions are carefully targeted and stress their commitment to de-escalation, provided there is no further provocation from across the border.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Operation Sindoor is a stark reminder that in today’s world, the battleground extends beyond borders and into the digital realm. While India’s decisive actions to protect its citizens are commendable, it is equally important for every individual to practise digital responsibility, empathy, and unity.

The Logical Indian believes that truth, harmony, and constructive dialogue are the cornerstones of a resilient society. By following the government’s dos and don’ts, we can collectively resist misinformation and foster a safer, kinder online environment. How can we, as a community, further build our digital resilience while promoting peace and understanding in challenging times?
