Neeraj Chopra, India’s Olympic and World Champion in javelin throw, won the men’s title at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 in the Czech Republic with a best throw of 85.29 metres, marking his second consecutive international victory after his recent triumph at the Paris Diamond League.
South Africa’s Douw Smit claimed silver with a personal best of 84.12m, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters took bronze. The event was directed by legendary coach and world record holder Jan Železný, who is also Neeraj’s mentor.
Officials and commentators praised Neeraj’s consistency and composure as he continues to build momentum ahead of upcoming global championships.
A Champion’s Consistency: Neeraj’s Clinical Performance in Ostrava
Neeraj Chopra’s victory at the Ostrava Golden Spike was a masterclass in focus and tactical awareness. His winning throw of 85.29m came in the third round, and he maintained his lead throughout the competition with four legal throws, all exceeding the 80-metre mark.
Despite sealing victory, Neeraj was visibly dissatisfied with his final attempt, signalling his relentless pursuit of personal milestones. “I feel good, but I don’t want to put any pressure on myself for 90m. But I’ll try really hard,” Neeraj told reporters before the event. “I’ve already thrown 90m this year after a little bit more improvement in technique. So let’s see when it comes next time, but I am ready,” he added.
Douw Smit and Anderson Peters delivered strong performances, but could not challenge Neeraj’s dominance on the day.
Building Momentum: Neeraj’s Remarkable Season and Upcoming Challenges
Neeraj Chopra’s win in Ostrava is the latest in a string of impressive results this season. He began 2025 with a victory at the Potch Invitational Meet in South Africa, finished second at the Doha Diamond League (breaking the Indian national record with a 90.23m throw), and most recently triumphed at the Paris Diamond League with an 88.16m effort.
This marks his 24th consecutive top-two finish in international competitions, a feat that places him among the all-time greats in javelin throw history, behind only Jan Železný and Sergey Makarov. Neeraj’s next major event is the NC Classic 2025 in Bengaluru on 5 July, where he will be the main attraction as India hosts its first major international javelin competition.
