Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh formally conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army upon Olympic javelin champion Neeraj Chopra during a pipping ceremony in South Block, New Delhi, on October 22, 2025.
Rajnath Singh praised Chopra as a symbol of perseverance, patriotism, and Indian excellence. The event was attended by top Army officials, including Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi.
Neeraj Chopra, enrolled in the Indian Army in 2016, has a historic track record that includes Olympic gold in 2020, silver in 2024, and world championship gold in 2023. The honorary commission was granted by President Droupadi Murmu earlier this year, honouring Chopra’s extraordinary achievements and service.
A Journey of National Pride
Neeraj Chopra was born on 24 December 1997 in Khandra village, Panipat district, Haryana. He joined the Indian Army in 2016 and serves with The Rajputana Rifles. Chopra rose to international stardom with his Olympic gold medal in javelin at the Tokyo 2020 Games, marking the first Indian athlete to achieve this feat in track and field.
He continued to shine by winning a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics and securing gold at the World Athletics Championships 2023. His personal best throw of 90.23 metres, achieved in 2025, is an unprecedented milestone in Indian sports history.
Honour and Recognition
During the ceremony, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh spoke highly of Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra, calling him “an epitome of perseverance, patriotism and the Indian spirit of striving for excellence.” He acknowledged Chopra’s discipline, dedication, and national pride as a source of inspiration for both sports enthusiasts and the armed forces.
The ceremony was graced by senior officials including General Upendra Dwivedi, reinforcing the significance of this honour. Neeraj Chopra earlier received many prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Param Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Honouring Neeraj Chopra with an honorary military rank is a commendable way to celebrate excellence, commitment, and patriotism beyond the battlefield. Such recognition bridges the gap between sports and national service, promoting unity and inspiring young people across the country. This gesture underscores the value of diverse contributions to nation-building and strengthens a shared sense of pride and identity.
