To address the issue of shortage of water and keep a check on its misuse during summer, the municipal corporation (MC) of Chandigarh is to impose a fine of Rs 2,000 on anyone who will be found misusing potable water.

This drive will be launched on April 15 and continue till June 30.  The MC has formed 16 teams, comprising three members each, to challan people misusing potable water. If any residents are seen using washing cars or watering plants during the morning hours between 5.30 am and 9 am, then they will be levied the fine.

Notices will also be issued to residents for wastage of water overflowing from tanks or leakages in pipelines. Water connection  of repeated offenders will also be disconnected.

Official record state that wastage of water due to leakage is 20 million gallons per day in Haryana. This water can be used to meet the demands of around 48,000 houses in the city.

Last year also, challans were issued.

Under the directives of the municipal corporation: Chandigarh residents have to use bucket water instead of pipe to wash cars between 5.30 am and 9 am. Courtyards and lawns cannot be watered in the morning. Citizens have to check on water overflow and leakages.

The Logical Indian supports this initiative by the Chandigarh municipal corporation. This drive is set to make people realize the importance of water and they will be compelled to conserve water instead of misusing it.
