Bihar’s political landscape has witnessed a significant shift as Nishant Kumar, son of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, was appointed as the state’s Health Minister in 2026. This move has reignited the fierce debate over dynastic politics, with the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) pointing out the irony of the JDU-BJP alliance adopting the same succession model they once criticised.
The appointment mirrors the 2015 entry of Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son, Tej Pratap Yadav, into the same department, leading to widespread discussions on whether merit or lineage governs Bihar’s leadership.
A Familiar Script in Bihar’s Power Corridor
The appointment of Nishant Kumar has drawn immediate comparisons to 2015, when a 27-year-old Tej Pratap Yadav took charge of the Health Department under the then Mahagathbandhan government. Today, RJD supporters have taken to social media with the slogan “same-to-same politics,” highlighting what they perceive as hypocrisy within the ruling alliance.
While Nishant had historically stayed away from the limelight, his recent surge in public appearances following his father’s brief resignation period signaled a calculated entry into active governance. An RJD spokesperson commented on the development, stating, “The very leaders who lectured us on ‘Jungle Raj’ and nepotism for decades have now embraced the same ‘Parivarwad’ to secure their own political futures.”
From Seclusion to the Secretariat
For years, Nishant Kumar was known for his private lifestyle, often staying detached from the high-decibel politics of Patna. However, the political equation in Bihar began to change as speculation regarding Nitish Kumar’s successor intensified.
The Chief Minister’s decision to hand over the crucial Health portfolio a department often used as a launching pad for young scions suggests a formal grooming process for the next generation of JDU leadership.
This transition comes at a time when both the JDU and BJP are facing internal and external pressure to justify their stance on political succession, having built a significant portion of their platform on anti-dynastic rhetoric.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that while every individual has the right to serve the public, the recurring pattern of dynastic succession in our democracy risks stifling fresh, grassroots leadership. When political legacies become the primary qualification for cabinet positions, it creates a barrier for capable individuals from non-political backgrounds.
Our democracy thrives when meritocracy, transparency, and public service take precedence over family ties. We hope to see a Bihar where leadership is earned through a commitment to the welfare of the common citizen rather than inherited through a surname.
