MP: Young Couple Beaten Mercilessly, Forced To Drink Urine For Marrying Against Family’s 'Pride'

In a shocking act of violence, a young couple was mercilessly thrashed by the girl’s family members for eloping. They were repeatedly beaten and also forced to drink urine. The incident took place on July 25, 2018, at Hardaspur village in Alirajpur district, Madhya Pradesh, Eenadu India reported.

The Incident

As per the reports from Eenadu India, the 23-year-old groom and the 21-year-old bride got married against the family wishes in May this year. As per tradition, the ‘Jaat panchayat’ (A caste community body) stepped in to smooth the things between two families and ordered to grant Rs.70,000 in cash and two goats to the bride’s family as a compensation by the groom. The man and the woman belonged to the Bhilala community, where the practice of couples eloping is common.

The couple later moved to Gujarat in search of a job. According to The Times of India, the couple had come to attend a religious function in the groom’s house and were sleeping at the groom’s uncle’s house. The girl’s family learnt about their whereabouts in the village, they barged into the uncle’s house and dragged the couple outside. The girl’s clothes were partially torn, her hair was cut off and the boy was tied to the pole. They both were mercilessly beaten and later forced to drink urine.

The accused after setting the couple free told them that its a revenge for ‘hurting the family’s pride’, NDTV reports read.

Police Statement

“They came back from Gujarat last week and were staying at the house of her husband’s uncle. The girl’s parents came to know about this and kidnapped them at gunpoint on July 25,” said Vikas Kapis, a local police officer. “The couple alleged in their complaint on June 28 that attackers tore portions of the woman’s clothes and forced the couple to drink the urine,” Kapis added.

The police said that, after the boy has complained about the girl’s father, two uncles and three others, two of them has been already arrested. The search of other accused is still being carried out.

The Logical Indian take

It is disappointing to see parents half-stripping their daughter and making her drink urine. This shows that human sentiments and rational thinking have been marred by irrational pride over caste and colour. While some of us cannot even fathom our parents doing such things, incidents like these have been a part and parcel of our society for decades. Many intercaste and interfaith couples have been killed too for the sake of pride. Couples who elope when their parents do not agree with their choice of spouse are also equally harassed. The Logical Indian community members hope that justice is served to this couple.
