With The Killing Of Two Sadhus, Violence Erupted In UP’s Auraiya; Two Policemen Suspended

A day after Independence Day, two sadhus were stabbed to death, and one other was seriously injured in the Bidhuna area of Auraiya district, Uttar Pradesh. The killing of the sadhus triggered protests and violence in the district on Wednesday, August 15. Yogi government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the two deceased sadhus and Rs 1 lakh for the injured Sadhu, and a top-level inquiry has been initiated.

According to the Indian Express, the angry citizens took on to the roads to protest against the death of the sadhus. The mob set some shops ablaze and threw stones forcing the police to fire in the air, said the police. The situation of violence was brought under control after a massive deployment of police personnel to maintain law and order. According to officials, two policemen have been suspended for negligence of duty after the violence in Auraiya, which is around 180 km from Lucknow.

“The citizens were complaining that the area where the murders took place was witnessing cases of cow slaughter and the victims were opposing it. That could be a possible motive behind the attack,” said the IG said. The officer also mentioned that Station House Officer, Akhilesh Mishra, was placed under suspension on charges of negligence for the violence in the area.


The incident

The two sadhus were stabbed to death at the Bhayanaknath temple in Kudarkot area of Bidhoona on the night of Tuesday. The other sadhu who got injured was taken to the hospital. The exact motive behind the killing is not ascertained yet. However, the police suspected that the sadhus opposing to the cow slaughter could be one reason for the death.

As per the additional DG, Avinash Chandra said the sadhus were found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds on their necks and other body parts. The monks were found tied to a charpoy (wooden bed) and attacked, the official added. The victims were identified as Lajja Ram (65) and Halke Ram (53), residents of Bakewar, Etawah. Another monk, who received the injuries, Ramsharan (56), he was shifted to Saifai hospital.

According to the Zee News, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed top officials including the Principal Secretary (Home) and the state DGP to take action against culprits within 48 hours. Meanwhile, the BJP led CM, Adityanath has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the two deceased sadhus and Rs 1 lakh for the injured sadhu. Special surveillance teams were sent to Auraiya from Kanpur to assist local police in investigating the case, officials said.
