A family of ten – women, children, elders and a differently-abled teenager – returning from a marriage ceremony in Shikohabad-Kasganj passenger train were brutally attacked and robbed by a gang of youths on Wednesday in Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh.

The incident happened between Mota and Nibkarori railway stations – about 30 km away from Farrukhabad junctions.

The victims were residents of Kaimganj – Mohammad Shakir (50), his wife Asiya (40), Arsi (18-year-old daughter) his two sons Faizan alias Fizu (17), Arasan (22), Arif (35-year-old brother), Asif (17-year-old nephew), Shaheed (brother-in-law), Shenaz and Maenaz (sisters). Out of the 10, four suffered hand fractures, four had head injuries and almost all had internal stomach injuries.

As reported by The Times of India, one of the family members, 50-year-old Mohammed Shakir, who suffered a head injury along with a fracture in the right hand, said, “It was a horror which I cannot forget. They attacked us with iron roads, robbed our belonging and molested our women. They didn’t even spare my 17-year-old physically and mentally challenged son.”

“They verbally abused us with some in the attacking group saying, “Kill them, they are Muslims”, and they continued to beat us until we went unconscious,” he added.

A video of the assault that The Times of India claims to be in possession of shows 30-35 men with iron rods and sticks beating the passenger coach of the train and pelting stones to break the glass panel of the emergency window to jump inside.

Shakir’s 22-year-old son, Arsaan, reported, “The assailants groped my mother’s and sister’s blouses and salwar tore it. They snatched their gold chains and took our luggage and jewellery. They even attacked other passengers who came to rescue us. Later the passengers abandoned the coach leaving us behind to fight the assailants.”

“After the incident, we attempted to contact police on dial 100, but every time, the call was dropped. Later when the train reached Farrukhabad junction, the GRP took us to the hospital,” he continued.

An FIR has been lodged under Section 395 (punishment for dacoity) and more sections will be added further down the investigation, said OP Singh, superintendent of police (SP) GRP Jhansi division. Based on the video of the incident, special operation group and other police teams have detained three men who are under questioning.

When The Times of India enquired about the absence of Government Railway Police (GRP) squad in the train, the SP said, “Due to Kavad Yatra, force have been deployed in various location to provide safety to pilgrims, hence it has caused a shortage of men to provide security to trains.”

The Logical Indian community strongly condemns the attack against the Muslim family. The assailants did not even spare the differently-abled and mentally challenged teenager because, apart from being criminals, they were people inspired by hate against a particular community. Such acts of discriminatory violence have no place in a secular country. We urge the Uttar Pradesh police to take staunch legal action against the mob and bring them to justice.
