UP: Jealous Cousins Sedate, Gangrape Minor Girl For Excelling In Studies; Teacher Joins In

In a harrowing incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur, a girl was sedated and raped repeatedly by four jealous cousins in a government school campus for being exceptionally good in studies.

In fact, a teacher also joined the four boys in raping the girl. The matter came to light after the perpetrators made a video of the act and circulated some of the clips in a WhatsApp group among family members.

The 16-year-old girl’s parents lodged an FIR against all five men on Saturday, June 29. While one of the accused has been arrested, the others are absconding.

An Attempt To “Cut Her To Size”

“Once the girl was sedated, the youths and their teacher took turns to rape her while one of them filmed the act on a mobile phone. When she regained consciousness, she was told she fainted on the playground and was hence, brought to the staff room,” India Today quoted Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Madhuvan Kumar Singh as saying.

In her complaint, the class 8 student said that she was gang-raped by her cousins because she excelled in studies.

“The incident took place at the government school in Maholi thana area of Sitapur. The accused are seniors in the same school,” the police officer added. While food laced with sedatives were served in the staff room, the assault took place during recess when the boys asked the survivor to have lunch with them.

What a preliminary probe indicates is that the cousins, who failed in examinations, wanted to “cut her to size” for excelling in studies.

The girl and her cousins lived in a joint family, and the boys were allegedly humiliated when the girl stood first in her class.

It is unfortunate to see that a girl is not safe among her own family members for a reason such as excelling in academics. The regressive mindset of these boys drove them to believe that they have the right to ‘punish’ her for being better than them.

The boys, instead of believing that a better option would have been to work on their own skills, deemed it appropriate to use their ‘power’ to try to bring the survivor down.

The Logical Indian urges authorities to take the strictest possible action against the accused.
