On the early hours of April 4, four car-borne youth threw acid on a 25-year old woman police constable in Sadar area of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, reported the Times Of India. The victim has sustained severe burn injuries and is undergoing treatment.

The incident happened when Neelam Sharma at around 4:30 am was going for her duty at Krishna Janam Bhoomi temple in Mathura. The moment she came out of her rented room and started walking towards the temple, the miscreants attacked her. It was later found by the police that one of the miscreants, Sanjay Singh, who threw acid on her, was well known to the victim.

Taken to a private hospital for better treatment

Soon after the incident, the culprits fled and local residents rushed to the spot after hearing the victim screaming in pain. They reached out to her housemate, Neetu, who is also a constable. After being informed about the incident, Neetu dialled the police control room.

Neelam was taken to the district hospital in Agra. According to Hindustan Times, Satyarth Aniruddh Pankaj, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mathura said, “ Initially, she was taken to the emergency ward of SN Hospital in Agra but was later admitted to a private hospital”. Currently, she is in ICU with over 40% burn injuries. The doctors said that they are going to keep her under observation as her condition is critical. Amal Pal Singh, sub-inspector at Sadar police station said that she is out of danger.

Is the rejection of marriage main reason?

The police said that Sanjay Singh, who is one of the accused was close to Neelam. Singh forced Neelam to marry but due to some reason, the marriage did not take place. After this, Neelam maintained distance from Singh and changed her phone number. Desperate, he managed to get her new number and when Neelam got to know about it, she confronted him.

The police have registered a case under Section 326A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by the use of acid), 326 A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by the use of acid), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code against the four accused Sanjay Singh, Sonu, and two others.
