An elderly lady was grievously injured after she was dragged off by a train while she resisted a robber snatching her bag. 58-year-old woman, Pratibha Tripathi fell off the Udyan Express as it slowed down between the Masjid and Sandhurst Road station as she bravely fought off a thief. She suffered multiple fractures from this ordeal.

According to Times of India, on August 22, Pratibha Tripathi, who is from Andheri, had boarded the train from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) at around 8 am. She was heading for Bangalore and was seated on the first row of a reserved compartment. The robber, who also boarded the train from CSMT, suddenly closed in on her as the train slowed down between Masjid and Sandhurst Road station and grabbed her bag.

According to her family, Prathiba who had always been a fighter resisted the robbery and struggled with the thief, refusing to let go of her bag. The man holding the bag dragged her to the exit. As he jumped off the train, Prathiba who was still holding her bag fell off the train on to the tracks. The fall resulted in multiple fractures on her hips and right arm and a cut on her palm. The thief took off with her bag.

Even as she was bleeding profusely, with an active presence of mind, Prathiba waved down the motorman of the passing Karjat-bound down train. The motorman helped her into one of the coaches and communicated to the station master about the incident. The cops helped Prathiba by taking her to JJ Hospital. There, she gave her son Varun’s contact details to the officers.

Varun was contacted by the police and was asked to reach the hospital as fast as possible. He told Times of India, “Her motto has always been that one should fight for what’s right, even if it means giving up your life. When I told her cops had traced the robber, she said the man shouldn’t be beaten, but he should know what he’s done to an old woman.”

According to Hindustan Times, The robber has been identified as 24-year-old Muqaddar Idrisi. He was arrested by Government Railway Police (GRP) on Sunday and has been booked for attempted murder and robbery. DCP Purushottam Karad said, “He has no criminal history. However, on interrogation, we found he had robbed a cell phone from a male passenger on August 20 near Masjid. Tripathi’s stolen handbag contained some gold, cash and her cell phone. We arrested Idrisi before he could sell off both phones.”

Prathiba will be bedridden for the next two months, undergoing treatment for her grievous injuries. “She has been through a few operations, and now her condition is stable. Whatever happened to my mother was horrible, but she is a fighter. Even now, she tells the police to refrain from beating up the robber and instead make him aware of his actions consequences,” said her son, Varun.
