Trinamool Congress MLA Satyajit Biswas was shot dead by unidentified assailants inside a Saraswati puja marquee on February 9, 2019 evening in West Bengal’s Nadia district. Biswas was an MLA from Krishnaganj constituency. BJP MLA Mukul Roy along with three other people was booked on February 10, 2019, in connection with the killing of Biswas, reported the Times Of India.

Mukul Roy was a TMC general secretary who later joined BJP due to a growing political rift between Mamata Banerjee and him. Mukul has denied the allegation and said that his name made into FIR due to policial conspiracy. A police officer told to PTI that two of the four people named in the FIR were arrested on February 10, 2019. Kartik Mondal, Sujit Mondal, and Abhijeet Pundari were the other three against whom FIR was registered. Sujit and Kartik were arrested on the morning of February 10 and have been remanded in 14 days’ police custody by the Ranaghat court. Abhijeet is at large.

There are allegations that there was no security cover despite the presence of MLA and minister at the Saraswati Puja celebrations. A departmental inquiry against the officer in charge of local Hanskhali police, Anindya Bose and the personal security officer(PSO) of Biswas, Probhas Mondal has been initiated, the police said. The PSO was reportedly on leave on the day of the mishap and Bose did not find a replacement even after knowing this.

What did the police say?

The police officer said that they have arrested two people and detained three others. The gun that was used to shoot the MLA was a country-made revolver, and it has been recovered. He further mentioned that through the investigation it seems that Biswas was shot from behind and it was a well-planned plot. The state CID is also looking into the matter that how the event which the Biswas attended suffered at least 11 power cuts.

What did the TMC members say?

Soon after the murder, Trinamool started blaming the opponent party, BJP for the murder. TMC’s Nadia President, Gouri Sankar Dutta pointed on Roy for conspiring to kill Biswas. Senior state minister Partha Chatterjee said that perpetrators and the conspirators of this murder need to be arrested. Mamata Banerjee herself reached out to Biswa’s wife Rupali and said that strong action will be taken against the perpetrators.
