A group of students from Kochi, Kerala has developed a helmet that won’t let the bike start if the rider is drunk, reported The Times Of India. To address the growing concern of bikers getting into fatal accidents across the nation, this group of students have come up with this smart helmet. The Forbes last year reported that nearly 5,300 people were killed on motorcycles in 2016. And it was found that in 25% of these accidents, the motorcyclists had a blood alcohol content (BAC) over the legit limit. This is the highest percentage of any other vehicle type.

The smart helmet is embedded with sensors that are connected with the two wheeler’s engine and speedometer. The helmet sends out alerts when the driver is drunk or violates traffic rules. The helmet was presented at the Bengaluru Civic Fest at Freedom Park on February 14, 2019.

Meet the team

The group of 5 students all from class 11 said that their smart helmet can bring down the number of road accidents. Amal Varghese, Antony K Prince, Ajith Paul, Arun K Babu, and GT Aswin are the students of St. George Higher Secondary School, Kochi. They have been working on the helmet in their laboratory since last July. However, their project was affected due to Kerala flood. Explaining how Kerala flood had affected their project, Arun said that their houses were flooded and they had to halt for around one-and-half months. He said they are expecting to get done with the project by April. He further said that the Kerala police have appreciated their project and also shared their prototype video on their Facebook page.

What does the helmet do?

The team has integrated several sensors in the smart helmet. Apart from not allowing the bike to start if the rider is drunk, the helmet also notifies when the helmet is not worn properly. It is also integrated with a distress alarm system which automatically sends alerts to nearest police stations and hospitals if the rider has met with an accident. This is very crucial as this can save multiple lives. The team is planning to install a GPS in the smart helmet as well.

The Logical Indian Take

The Logical Indian appreciates the life-saving helmet that these young school going boys have developed. We hope this helmet slackens down the rate of two-wheeler accidents in future, and make people aware of wearing a helmet while riding a bike.
