In today’s fast-paced, competition-laden, technology-driven world, all of us have to struggle hard to achieve the best in life. Parents give their children the best possible education but forget to teach them how to be independent and take care of the house without any external help.

Introduction of Home Economics

Understanding these concerns regarding lifestyle, a Spanish college has introduced “home economics” among other subjects taught in school to teach children ironing, cooking, cleaning, bed making, and washing clothes.

The institute in question is Colegio Montecastelo, located in Vigo, a town near North Western Spain. The course would run parallel with other scholastic programs, for which instructor, teachers and father of some students were given responsibility to teach students.

Initially, when this idea was introduced in school, students were taught how to cook. But teaching how to wash/iron clothes, or how to clean the house and keep it neat, was left out. Despite all resistance, the home economics class continued and with discreet success, many young men discovered that they are very much able to do things that they never imagined they could.

Positive reviews from children

After getting to know what the home ec class taught children, parents saw kids who were never interested in household work are making an equal contribution to the chores around the house. The idea not only taught children household chores, but it also helped them be a good citizen. In fact, learning household work at a young age can help people later in adulthood.

What is home Economics

Now the question here is what exactly this term is “home economics”? It is just a science of operating domestic units with efficiency, comfort, and sustainability. This idea of having clean room , tidy clothes and doing household works on their own is generally not common, people termed these as the features of military school and people even say that these are just for girls like in 70’s when boys have to do outdoor stuff and girls have to manage house so that in future when she could get married then she will probably be a good housewife. But time changes, situation changes and so does the mentality. And when our young society demands equality and gender balance we have to embrace this like what Spanish people are doing by teaching their student (doesn’t matter what their gender is) about how to manage their lives.
