Bhartiya Janta Party’s Ghatkopar, Maharashtra MLA Ram Kadam has surrounded himself with controversy after he made an incredulous statement to help “kidnap girls” who rejects a marriage proposal. MLA Kadam received a lot of criticism on a viral video in which he is seen making this statement during a Dahi Handi event. Later, the MLA backtracks on his statement saying he was misquoted.

“Your parents should like the girl”

A video which was shared by National Congress Party (NCP) MLA Jitendra Awhad on Twitter, shows Kadam talking to a huge gathering of men in Marathi. The MLA with a smile on his face goes on to say, “Take down my number. If you call me and say, ‘Sir, I proposed to this girl but she declined. Please help’. This [girls declining proposals] is wrong. Of course, I will help. First bring your parents, if they say they like the girl, I will kidnap her and hand her over to you,” reports the Scroll.

The crowd laughed at his statement but soon the viral video of the incident received wrath from the people. MLA Awhad posted this video saying “How can women in this country be safe if ruling party MLAs openly boast about kidnapping women?”

After backlash, Kadam backtracks

However, on Tuesday, after making it to the headlines over his inappropriate remarks, Kadam took his statement back. He says he was misquoted, and he just meant that every youth should marry after taking their parents into confidence.

He further says, “If there was something objectionable in my statement, the journalists there would have heard it. They didn’t (report it) because they heard the entire speech and not just watch a short video. Opposition leaders are making a small clip viral on Twitter to create a wrong impression of me.”

While speaking to The Logical Indian the MLA said that his statement has been distorted. He says, he respects women a lot. He just wants youth to marry women of their parents choice. He says, “I consider women incarnation of God, why will I make such comments. Every rakhi more than 600 women tie rakhi to me. There are some people who are using a short clip to insult me.”

When asked about why did he use the word “kidnap girl” to help men, he reiterated that he was misquoted by opposition leaders and soon he disconnected the phone.

“He should apologise”

The incident drew sharp criticism from Shiv Sena (BJP’s ally) as well as opposition parties in the state.

Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray tweeted, “One BJP MLA has offered from a stage to help boys kidnap girls and marry them even against the will of the girls. I guess he believes marriage is like forming a govt. Ashamed and disgraced that he sits in the legislative assembly of Maharashtra- a land of culture & women liberty.”

State NCP chief Jayant Patil also said “A case should be filed against the MLA if a girl is kidnapped in Maharashtra as the MLA himself is encouraging their kidnapping. Kadam should apologise,” as reported by The Firstpost.
