On September 26, a CCTV footage from Majitha, Amritsar surfaced on the internet. It showed a woman falling from the roof of a speeding police jeep. She suffered injuries on her head and was hospitalised with the help of the local residents. Reportedly, she travelled atop the police jeep for around three km before she fell off. The incident occurred a day ago on 25 September.
Earlier, on September 22, the crime branch team had come to arrest her ‘innocent’ husband Gurwinder Singh and when the victim and her family opposed, the cops allegedly thrashed them
“On Tuesday, they once again barged into our house and started asking for the male members of our family. When I told them no man was present there, they dragged me out of my house and thrashed me badly. There was no woman cop on the team. Then they made me sit on the roof of their vehicle in front of the villagers. The vehicle also took a round of the village. After the villagers started gathering, the cops took the vehicle towards Chawinda Devi town,” the victim said according to Hindustan Times.
The woman, identified as 32-year-old Jaswinder Kaur, told the media that the police raided her home in Shahzada village in Majitha constituency, around 20 km from Amritsar, to arrest her father-in-law Balwinder Singh, a former Sarpanch in connection with a property dispute case. The victim alleged that she was forced to sit on top of the jeep as they could not find her father-in-law.
The spotlight fell on the incident, when the CCTV footage showed a jeep, carrying a woman atop it, being driven by a police officer. She fell off from the roof of the vehicle when it took a quick turn at Chawinda Devi bypass in Majitha. Some passersby took her to the Majitha civil hospital, said the police
According to a report by Times Now, the woman was dumped to the ground from the jeep by the cops when the villagers objected. However, the video shows that the woman fell off the moving jeep when it was taking a sharp turn at a very high speed.
In the video posted by ABP Sanjha, the victim said that at 6 am police came and knocked at her door. There were two police jeeps outside and the officers directly dragged her husband who was half asleep. She objected to the move and asked for evidence for her husband’s arrest. However, the Police not only turned a deaf ear to her but forcibly put her on the roof of the jeep for protesting. As per the interview, she did not mention anything about her father in law.
Majitha DSP Nirlep Singh said, “As per our preliminary probe, the woman was forcibly made to sit on the vehicle by the crime branch team. We have received MLR report of the woman and action will be taken against the accused after recording her statement.”
The Logical Indian Take
The Police are the protector of law and order. It is their responsibility to protect and safeguard citizens, but this incident reflects the brutal acts of Police being inflicted on the victim and her family. We request the Punjab Police to take immediate action and probe into the case.
