After Rajnath Singh's Intervention, Man Arrested Over Rape Threat To Cong’s Priyanka Chaturvedi’s Daughter

A man who threatened Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi with the rape of her 10-yr-old daughter for a fake quote that was attributed to her has been arrested after Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s intervention. Girish Maheshwari, the man who threatened her has been arrested from Ahmedabad by the Mumbai police on Wednesday. He has been arrested under Section 509 (word, gesture intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the IT Act.

In a tweet, Chaturvedi thanked the Delhi and Mumbai police for the swift action and showed her gratitude to the Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Home Ministry headed by Rajnath Singh ordered a case to be registered against twitter handle @GirishK1605 and had asked twitter to furnish details of the handle.

What happened?

“They attack women who have a different opinion. Would want the government to come down heavily on such people,” said Ms Chaturvedi after the arrest, underlying the need for sending a strong message, reported NDTV.

Priyanka Chaturvedi told NDTV that trolls went berserk on Twitter after a fake quote about the rape of the 7-year-old victim from Mandsaur was attributed to her. The fake quote attributed to Chaturvedi claimed she said, “Only one rape has been committed in Mandsaur. It is the right of Muslims to rape. Our party is with Irfan (the rapist).” One of the trolls, one handle @GirishK1605 threatened her 10-year-old daughter with rape. That tweet is no longer available.

In an interview with News18, she questioned that how can her minor daughter, who doesn’t even have an idea about the political discourse of the country be threatened with rape.

She lodged a formal complaint and said that the person despite having Lord Ram as his profile picture had the audacity to make a statement of such derogatory stature.

Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “Anybody who creates a Frankenstein Monster must remember that (it)…swallow you up. Anybody who rides a tiger must know that the tiger has to decide when to eat you up, you cannot decide as to when to dismount. This is a tiger put beneath Ms Sushma Swaraj by the party to which she belongs (sic).”

The Facebook profile of Girish Maheshwari suggests that he is a part of the accounting team of Bharatiya Janata Party. Although, which is not confirmed yet.

The Logical Indian Take

Priyanka Chaturvedi has been a victim of BJP’s IT cell. It is not surprising as MEA Sushma Swaraj, who is a senior minister in the party has been abused relentlessly by the IT cell members for granting passports to the interfaith couple who were allegedly harassed by a passport official for their religion.

This incident again shows a vile narrative that has spread in the minds of people. This has paralysed them from making informed and sensible decisions and hacked their ability to differentiate between right and wrong and they resort to abuse. One arrest is not going to change much, but this is a beginning. Stricter action should be taken against those who hide behind anonymous accounts to spread hate and fear.
