Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia told The Times of India, “The Facebook headquarters on Monday informed the state police that a minor girl was contemplating suicide. The state police reacted promptly and saved the girl.”
The girl is said to be safe and she and her family are being counselled. “Facebook had sent an alert to our nodal officer and he at once activated our social media centre and we were able to track the girl. Our field teams got activated and the family was traced. We counselled the girl and the guardian. The girl is safe and sound. This has been a great success of our social media initiative”, Additional Director General of Police Harmeet Singh was quoted by NDTV.
It is to be noted that the Assam Police had recently launched a social media centre. Under this, an anti-rumour campaign called “Think” has also been launched to prevent mob lynchings and suicides.
The Logical Indian appreciates Facebook for alerting the authorities. We also applaud the Assam Police for their prompt action, due to which a life was saved.
