Five people were killed and two others suffered injuries when a chartered plane crashed in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar on June 28. The aircraft belongs to UY Aviation, a Mumbai-based company. Earlier, it was owned by Uttar Pradesh government and was sold after it met with an accident in Allahabad.

The director general of civil aviation (DGCA) said that the two pilots, two aeroplane engineers on board and a person on the ground were the ones who died. The four people on board who died in the crash have been identified as Captain PS Rajput, co-pilot Maria Zuberi, assistant maintenance engineer Surbhi and air technician Manish Panday. The identity of the pedestrian who was killed in the crash has not been ascertained, reported India Today.

Major engine fault

The 12-seater King Air C 90 aircraft (VT- UPZ) lost contact with the ATC seconds before the crash. The flight being small took off from Juhu airport. But the pilots informed the ATC that due to the major engine failure, they would make an emergency crash landing at Mumbai international airport. They were just a mile away from the airport and crashed near Ghatkopar.

Reports suggest that the pilots saved many lives while risking their own and crashed the flight in an empty construction site. If the plane crashed in any other area, the casualties would have been in hundreds while the loss could have been in crores. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau will conduct a detailed probe into the crash.

The family was not informed about the crash. Maria Zuberi’s husband texted her asking whether her flight landed or not. Later, from the news channels, he got to know about the crash. He blamed the aviation company for the death as the weather was not fit for flying.

They were reluctant to fly

47-year-old Maria Zuberi told her husband in the morning before flying that she would be back home early as the weather would not permit them to fly, reported The Times of India. Relatives of PS Rajput also said that he was not keen on flying because of the bad weather.

“We don’t know why they took the test flight after all. We don’t know if the company (U Y Aviation) pressured them into flying. From what she (Zuberi) told me on Wednesday night, the pilot too was not in favour of flying in bad weather,” said Kathuria, Maria’s husband.

Zuberi had 1,000 hours of flying experience and had been flying for the past 17 years. “She was a very good pilot, the first in her Muslim family to choose this profession,” her husband added. He further said that UY Aviation Private Limited, owner of the aircraft, did not communicate with them or come to the hospital, reported The Hindu. The couple has a 15-year-old daughter.

U Y Aviation administrative officer Anil Chauhan said, “We had purchased the aircraft two years ago and it was entrusted to Indamer Aviation for maintenance. This was its first test flight. We have lost two colleagues, pilot Pradeep and co-pilot Maria, both in their forties.”
