Kerala NDA vice-chairman and Rajya Sabha MP, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, resort is in the midst of an encroachment controversy. Niraamaya Retreats, owned by his strategic investment company Jupiter Capital Ltd., located at Kumarakom village panchayat is spread over 8 acres adjacent to Vembanad Lake.

Kumarakom village panchayat secretary E Vishnu Namboothiri issued a letter to the resort saying that the property that is encroaching on a portion of Poramboke land is in violation of Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act, 2008. The notice says that the authorities need to demolish the portion within 15 days. If they fail to do so, the panchayat will themselves demolish the building.

Rajeev blames opposition

Rajeev’s wife Anju Chandrasekhar is one of the four directors of the resort. In a series of tweets, he lashed out at the Pinarayi government. Just two days ago Democratic Youth Federation of India(DYFI) cadres have vandalised the resort and caused damaged to some villas. He stated that he will get the state rid of the red and violent politics. He also alleged that “CM Pinarayi was stung by unrelenting media coverage on Pinarayi’s complicity in Munnar encroachments.”

MP’s reply

This is not the first time I am a target of political violence or political lies and attacks and certainly, it will not be the last. This is an obvious sloppy attempt to distract away from the recent embarrassment of a sitting Left Minister who had encroached public land in particular and about CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s govts pathetic track record on corruption and Governance with 3 ministers having to resign in just over a year.

Encroachment or not

In 2008, Niraamaya Retreats had got mandatory sanctions from Kumarakom village panchayat for the project. In 2013, residents of the surrounding area near to the resort approached panchayat officials saying that the sewage plant of the resort might harm the ecological balance of the place. The Panchayat asked them to stop but Niraamaya Retreats got a stay order from the Kerala High Court.

This is when a citizen’s group called Jana Samparka Samiti decided to implead into the Kerala High Court.

According to The News Minute report, a member of the Samiti said, “We also told the HC that there were encroachments. During the hearings, the HC asked the Revenue Department to respond to these allegations. The department did that. On the basis of this report, the Tahasildar office in 2016 sent a report to the panchayat clearly stating that a portion of land had been encroached upon and it should be reclaimed”.
