In a new revelation that throws light on the Kathua rape case, forensic medical experts said that an overdose of sedatives, which were forcibly given to the victim, might have pushed her into come before her death.

This revelation comes after the crime branch of the Jammu and Kashmir police, while probing the case, sent a sample of her viscera to a forensic laboratory earlier this month to examine the effect of “mannar” candies (local cannabis) and Epitril 0.5 mg tablets, which was forcibly given to the girl by the accused, reported NDTV. Doctors then opined that an overdose of the pills might have resulted in her death.

After conducting a thorough examination, the doctors concluded that the medicine forcibly given to the child contained Clonazepam salt. This is usually provided under medical supervision while keeping in mind the age and weight of the patient.

An Overdose Of Sedatives

According to the medical experts quoted in an NDTV article, “She was forcefully administered five tablets of Clonazepam of 0.5 mg each on January 11, 2018, which is higher than the safe therapeutic dose. Subsequently, more tablets were given… the signs and symptoms of an overdose may include drowsiness, confusion, impaired coordination, slow reflexes, slowed or stopped breathing, coma (loss of consciousness) and death”. However, for therapeutic purposes, a girl of 30 kgs is recommended to be given a dose of 0.1 to 0.2 mg per day divided into three doses for a patient. However, the doctors could not provide any analysis of the effect of  ‘mannar’ candies.

The crime branch had decided to seek medical advice after the accused, and their lawyers claimed that it is impossible for the girl not to have cried for help while she was being tortured in captivity. It is then that the branch asked the medical experts to check the effects of the medicine on the body of an eight-year-old girl.

Reportedly, the medical examination reports are to be submitted to the district and sessions court in Punjab’s Pathankot, where the case is going to be heard next week after the summer break. The case was shifted from Kathua to Pathankot upon the direction of the Supreme Court.

Background To The Rape Case

The gruesome incident took place in January 2018 when a girl from the Bakarwal community disappeared when she was out grazing ponies. Her body was recovered on January 17, a week after her disappearance, from a wooded part of Rasana village. Tests were conducted to find out whether she was raped or not and found that she was alive for three or four days after she went missing. She was kept in a large prayer room. Her body was found almost 200 metres from the prayer room.
