The four nuns who protested against the rape of their fellow nun by Bishop Franco Mulakal are facing ordeals again. As per the papers accessed by The News Minute, the Superior General of the congregation Missionaries of Jesus has transferred them to different convents. Four out of the five nuns who protested are facing transfer orders.

Nuns transferred

The nuns have been asked to go back to the place where they had previously been assigned. Sister Alphy Pallasseril has been asked to go to Bihar, Sister Anupama Kelamangalathuveliyil to Punjab, Sister Josephine Villoonnickal to Jharkhand and Sister Ancitta Urumbil to Kannur. However, Sr. Nina Rose has not received any transfer orders.

The letter addressed to Sr. Anupama stated, “You have chosen in your individual capacity to support and pursue the legal battle seeking justice. The MJ Congregation and its members do not intend to make any sort of intervention or interference into the due process of law and justice, and you will be free to carry on the judicial pursuit.”

Talking to The Times of India, Sr. Anupama said, “This is like a disciplinary action against us, we are preparing a reply to the mother general. This is a ploy to torpedo the case and isolate the victim”. The notice was reportedly sent by Sister Rejeena Kadamth, mother general of Missionaries of Jesus, and it stated that the actions of the nuns violated the congregations’ code of conduct, reported Firstpost.

Why are the nuns targeted?

The issue began when the five nuns protested outside the Kerala High court, demanding justice for their fellow nun who was raped by Bishop Franco Mulakal. The rape victim alleged that the bishop had raped her 13 times between 2014 and 2016, when he visited Kottayam, from Jalandhar. There was also a massive outcry in the social media platforms against the Bishop. Following a series of protests, the Bishop was arrested in September 2018 and was also released on bail soon after. Though a lot of people supported the nuns, there were also a huge outcry by politicians against the nuns.

According to India Today, MLA PC George from Kerala said, “No one has doubt that the nun is a prostitute. Twelve times she enjoyed it, and the 13th time it is rape? Why didn’t she complain the first time?”

Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in his article in Deshabimani, said the nuns’ protest is an attempt to defame the church and the government.

The Bishop accused of raping a nun has received bail, but the people who supported justice are facing hardships. This example will refrain from people to come out and support justice. The Logical Indian condemns this act of the congregation against the nuns.
