Nadia Murad, a former ISIS sex slave, who became a human rights activist for Yazidi women in Iraq, is going to marry the man who helped her escape the monstrous ordeal, reported Mail Online.

Her fiance, Abid Shamdeen, once worked as an interpreter for the US Army. The two of them met during her days of intense trauma following a daring escape from ISIS captivity at Mosul in Iraq. She found asylum in Germany and has become the face for hundreds of Yazidi women who are gang-raped, tortured, brutalized and sold openly by the infamous ISIS extremists. Murad was honoured by her selection as a UN Goodwill Ambassador in 2017, for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.

Announcing her engagement on Twitter and Instagram, Murad shared a picture of the happy couple accompanied by a heartwarming post:

“Yesterday was a special day for @AbidShamdeen & I. We are very thankful and humbled for all the wishes & support from our family & friends. The struggle of our people brought us together & we will continue on this path together. Thank you for your support everyone!”

In August 2014, when she was 21, Murad was abducted by a group of ISIS militants from her village Kocho near Sinjar in Northern Iraq. During her kidnapping, her mother and five of her eight brothers were violently killed, along with 300 others in a Yazidi genocide. Today Murad heads a campaign which is working to rebuild the Sinjar region. Sinjar, once home to over 4 lakh Yazidis, lies completely devastated because of war.

In her autobiography, “The Last Girl: My Story of Captivity and My Fight Against the Islamic State”, Murad recounted her torment in the ISIS camps and revealed to the world the dark reality of the sex slave trade practised by ISIS.

Her book vividly describes her days of nightmare, when she was endlessly raped, beaten and sold around in the pretext of being purified from her ancestry. Incidentally, the ISIS justifies their torment on the Yazidis by terming them as non-Islamic infidels.

“At some point, there was rape and nothing else. This becomes your normal day. You don’t know who is going to open the door next to attack you, just that it will happen and that tomorrow might be worse,” Murad has written in her book, as Mail Online reported. After one failed attempt to escape, she was whipped and raped by six men till she went unconscious. Recounting her days of horror in her book has been difficult for Murad, who said, “It never gets easier to tell your story. Each time you speak it, you relive it.”

Eventually, Murad successfully escaped by leaping over the compound wall of her captor’s quarters. Today she has found happiness again and is set to start a new journey with the love of her life. Nadia Murad is now an active changemaker who aims to seek prosecution and sentencing of ISIS militants and to revive a better life for the Yazidi women still captive as sex slaves. “I want to be the last girl in the world with a story like mine,” she said.
