MP: Harassed & Blackmailed, Girl Commits Suicide After She Was Denied Help From The Police

A minor committed suicide because she felt she was bringing shame to her family. The class 12 student from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was a victim of harassment and blackmail. She, with her family, approached the local police but they did not give sufficient attention to her complaints.

16-year-old Ashi (name changed) was being harassed by a neighbour.

According to the police, 19-year-old Milan used to follow the girl to her school. The accused and the girl were initially friends but after some time the girl stopped talking to him. Milan started harassing and threatening her, reportedly, even in public.

In her suicide note, she writes, “Papa, sorry, I did not do anything wrong but he was blackmailing me. My image has been ruined everywhere because he put my pics on FB. He forced me to write letters about you. He used to bother me during school-time. He used to force me to talk to him and I am very frustrated by all this. I don’t want your name to be tarnished because of me. Today, while coming back from school, people were saying that it was my fault. Sorry, please forgive me, Papa, I feel if end my life, the problems will end too.”

According to the victim’s brother, the family went to the police station on June 3. The police told the family that because there is no lady police officer in the station at the moment, due to which they can not file an F.I.R. The police asked the family to come to the station the next day.

“The next day when we went to the police station, the police asked us to write an application first,” he added.

On the same day, when the girl’s family continued to pressure the police to take action. The police went to the accused’s house. The accused was present at his house, so the police asked the parents to “keep a check on the boy” and left the place, the investigation officer said to The Logical Indian.

The family claims that the harassment with their daughter continued to happen and later the accused even threatened the girl and said he will abduct her. On June 5, the girl committed suicide after she was allegedly denied any further help from the police. “If I’m not there then the entire problem will get over,” she wrote in her suicide note.

The father blames the police for being so lenient in the case. “We have lost our daughter because of police negligence,” said the father.

Later, DIG Harinarayanchari Mishra took cognisance of the case and suspended Sub-Inspector Omkar Singh Kushwaha and the station head constable for not doing a proper investigation in the case. Now the case has been handed over to RNS Baduriya, who told The Logical Indian that the police have arrested the boy, along with his family. He was at his house only when the police arrested him. Further investigations are on in the case.

The problems with harassment cases are two-fold. People who are harassing, at times, don’t recognise the detrimental effects of their actions on their victim’s mental health. The police are often slow to recognise and act when people complain about harassment. Here too, the police did take action and swiftly arrested the accused, but only after a 16-yr-old ended her life.
