Many crimes are equally heinous as rape, but the crime is compounded when the accused offers to marry the victim to escape punishment.
An another shocking incident has come to light where a 19-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself. The girl was forced to marry her rapist on the intervention of panchayat. After seven months of wedlock, the rape survivor committed suicide by hanging herself.
As per Times of India, The rape survivor was tortured by her in-laws and it provoked her to hang herself on Tuesday.
The rape incident took place at Jagadhri in Yamunanagar district of Haryana in October 2015. The culprit Anuj was arrested by the police, but he offered to marry the rape victim. The rape victim was then a minor. Though after panchayat intervention, she agreed to marry her rapist. The couple entered into wedlock in March and in July Anuj was cleared from the rape charge after the girl was presented as a witness in Anuj’s favor.
Seven months after marriage she hanged herself to put an end to the torture. A case has been registered at Jagadhri City Police station by the victim’s mother.
“She was subjected to physical and mental torture. They had an altercation on Monday as well,” said Jagadhri City SHO Sunil Kumar, as reported by Times of India.
The victim’s mother blamed her in-laws and alleged that her daughter was killed. She informed the police that Anuj and his parents had been harassing her daughter to bring dowry and to pay their legal expenses in the rape case.
Another similar incident that took place in Bareilly, where a rapist after marrying the girl he raped, sold their baby for Rs 25,000 to a childless couple after she delivered the baby.
