700 Policemen Nab Culprits Who Snatched Purse From PM Modi’s Niece Within 48 hours

A 40-year-old woman reported a case of robbery in Delhi’s Civil Lines area on Saturday. The case could have been an ordinary FIR of snatching purse but it turned high profile as soon as the woman identified herself as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s niece!

The incident took place outside the Gujarati Samaj Bhawan where two miscreants snatched Damyanti Ben Modi’s purse while she was getting out of an auto-rickshaw. The bag had all her important documents including Rs 50,000 cash, two mobile phones, debit and credit cards. Damyanti Ben had returned from Amritsar and was heading towards Civil Lines from Old Delhi Railway Station.

Soon after she filed the case, DCP (North) Monika Bhardwaj took matters in her own hands and gave a public statement, “A case of snatching has been filed. We are analysing the CCTV footage from the railway station to Civil Lines. The investigation is underway and we will soon nab the accused.”

Realising the graveness of the matter, Delhi Police soon deployed 700 policemen and scanned around 200 CCTV recordings to finally catch the culprits reported India Today. The police arrested 21-year-old Gaurav, alias Nonu, from Sonipat where he was hiding at a relative’s home. The second culprit–Badal — was arrested later from Sultanpuri.

Gaurav’s wife informed the robbers that they have robbed PM’s niece. The duo mugs are drug addicts and have past criminal records of robbing passer-by. They have been stealing to pay for their drugs and to support their families as well.

Multiple CCTV footage was used to scan Nonu’s (Gaurav) pictures. Police took help from kids to find his house as elders might try to lie and help Nonu escape. However, the family had already left the place until they reached. Ultimately his mobile phone was tracked and he was arrested in Sonipat.

After the arrest, the accused confessed to their crimes saying that they realised the seriousness of the case after a large force of police started chasing them and raiding their houses. What’s surprising is that the prime location is just a few kilometres from Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal residences.

The Logical Indian Take

The Delhi Police, which comes under Union Home Ministry deployed 700 policemen immediately after it realised the victim was PM Modi’s niece. Until September 30, 2019, about 4,762 incidents of snatching have been reported from Delhi. Can Delhi police clarify how many of these cases have been solved?

In February 2014 when Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan’s buffaloes were stolen, the police force of an entire district was roped in along with sniffer dogs. Not only did the police found the culprits within a week, but also fired three of its own men for ‘dereliction of duty’.

Why is it that the whole law and order mechanism works on war footing whenever there are instances of thefts, robberies associated with the VIPs? Does the purse or mobile has to be of some MP’s or their relatives’ to be found quickly?
