Hundreds of students from different colleges in Aizawl, Mizoram staged a protest against the Government for sending 32 students to a fake institution in Kolkata. They demanded to compensate the desperate students whose careers have been jeopardized, further threatening to launch indefinite agitation unless their demands are met.

This protest was spearheaded by ACCJSU (Aizawl City College Joint Students Union) at Chanmari and Sikupuikawn and ended at Vanappa Hall where the protesters gathered and asked for a 5 point resolution.

The president of ACCJSU, Zondingsa expressed disappointment over the fact that 32 students were sent to a fake institution by Labour, Employment & Industrial Training (LE&IT) Department and Mizoram Youth Commission (MYC) with the help of Welfare Board Fund. Further adding to the inconvenience faced by students, he reflected the irregularities in the MoU signed between the government of Mizoram and Nalanda Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS).

One of the returnee students from NIAS, C Laltlanmawia addressed the rally and said that their intention was not to embarrass or harm the government but to get back their rights. He added that the students had raised their voice on several occasions with the LE&IT Minister, government officials and even before the CM, but, ultimately they were forced to seek help from the Student Union, reported The Northeast Today.

Matter

32 students were sent to Nalanda Institute of Advance Studies in 2014 to pursue bachelor’s degree in Hotel Management with the initiative of LE&IT Ministry and Mizoram Youth Commission. Many students returned home even before completing their course as the college was reportedly declared fake by the West Bengal Government.

Fake College
All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) makes it mandatory for all the Engineering Colleges to be affiliated with it. Any Technical institution imparting education without UGC or AICTE approval is considered fake. The degrees handed out by these institutes are not accepted as valid. At present, there is no mechanism to safeguard students from taking admissions in the unapproved institution. Apart from NIAS, the following are declared as unapproved institutions by West Bengal Government-

  • Amity Global Business School
  • Bengal Institute of Business Studies
  • Global Institute of Fashion Technology
  • Institute of Advanced Management

This list can be checked here.

The Five Point Resolution:

  • Demanding the government to apologise for hurting and mocking the sentiments of students.
  • To not send students outside the state before inspecting the institution.
  • Monitor the students who are sent outside the state for courses
  • Give compensation to the students sent to NIAS
  • Take measures to help aspiring students appear in the degree examinations

The Logical Indian requests the Government of Mizoram to look into this matter as it involves careers and future of the students. Governments should ensure that the fake universities are shut down and their owners punished for fraud. We also request the students to check the affiliation status of institutions with the UGC and AICTE before accepting admissions.
