UP: Man Commits Suicide By Hanging After Family Goes Hungry For 5 Days
A man from Kasganj in Uttar-Pradesh (UP) committed suicide due to hunger on August 31. Pooran Singh, a 41-year-old man was found hanged from a tree.
No Job, Had To Retort To Begging
He was a resident of Maheshpur road in Bilram area, which comes under the jurisdiction of Dholna Police. Singh was unemployed and even after his relentless effort to find work, he had to resort to begging to make the ends meet.
Singh had three children and a wife who were all impoverished and were forced to beg neighbours for food. Many a time, the family would go to bed without any food.
According to his 9-year-old daughter Gudiya, her father had even gone to Delhi in search of occupation but could not find any work.
The family had been starving since past five days which became unbearable for Singh to see.
Gudiya further told that after returning home on August 30, he bathed and went out. His body was found hanging from a tree the next day.
“For the past five days, we haven’t eaten a thing. I am ill but there is no money to buy medicine or food,” she told reporters.
Kasganj police PRO Ajay Bhadoria, however, said, “Pooran was a drug addict. His autopsy report says there was food in his stomach.”
Naib Tehsildar, Kirti Chaudhary, who paid visit to Singh’s family said, “No one informed us. But I have immediately provided ration with the help of the supply officer.”
However, the stark reality is that the scenario is not unusual in India. Poverty leads to hundreds of deaths in India annually.
According to the Rangarajan Committee Report, even in 2019, 46 million people out of 1.3 billion people still live below poverty line.
An estimate one in five die due to the lack of optimal amount of food and nutrients on their plates.
