Prominent Muslim citizens of Kolkata have written an open letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee against her minority appeasement policies, asking her not to spare the accused, who are Muslims, in the case of a doctor’s assault in NRS Hospital and a model getting attacked in Kolkata on the night of June 17.

Eminent Kolkata residents have urged CM Banerjee to take strict action against the accused.

“We Are Grieved And Embarrassed”

“We are Muslims living in Kolkata for decades. We have been deeply concerned with two events that occurred recently – the attack on doctors and the attack on actor Ushoshi Sengupta. The attackers in both instances were members of our community – Muslims. We are grieved and embarrassed,” the letter addressed to the Chief Minister read.

The citizens suggested two measures that the government can undertake to deal with the situation. The “assailants should be brought to book”, they suggested, and should not be allowed to go “scot-free because they happened to be Muslims.”

The citizens believe that by doing so, the perception that the community were being “shielded or appeased” could be challenged.

They urged the government to initiate programmes which would “educate and encourage” Muslim youths and families in Kolkata regarding “gender sensitization, civic consciousness and law compliance.”

Prominent citizens and activists, including Mudar Patherya, Hena Nafis, Mustafa Judge, Dr Zahid H Gangjee, Dr Aquil Basrai, Mamoon Akhtar and Shabnam Alam signed the letter.

What Are The Two Events?

Paribaha Mukhopadhyay, an intern doctor of Nil Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, was brutally beaten up for alleged medical negligence.

The accused, relatives of the man who died, were Muslim. A group of about 200 men came in trucks and brutally beat up the doctors with stones, bricks, chairs and bamboo sticks.

After days of protests, the doctors finally called off the strike earlier this week after a meeting with Mamata Banerjee.

Meanwhile, on June 17, former Miss India Universe Ushoshi Sengupta was allegedly attacked by seven Muslim men, identified as Sheikh Rahit, Fardin Khan, Sk Sabir Ali, Sk Gani, Sk Imran Ali, Sk Wasin and Atif Khan. They also vandalised the cab and assaulted the Uber driver. A detailed inquiry into the case is on.
