Incidents of kites flying leading to people getting injured and losing their lives are being reported from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Hyderabad. Particularly in the Gujarat and Rajasthan, the city-based doctors remained busy in treating people who came in the flock to get treated their injuries received from kites being flown.

Doctors in Rajasthan remained busy

The numbers of injured were more in Rajasthan mainly. While the sky was filled with colourful kites, people were getting injured too. The Times of India reported that around 300 people including children suffered from minor as well as serious kite related injuries. Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital’s Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics witnessed 227 patients. According to the hospital officials, 41 patients sustained injuries from strings(manjha) of kites.

People in Rajasthan underwent, X-Rays of bones, CT scans of the brain, and stitching of wounds to treat the kite related injuries. In Rajasthan, a 4-yr-old boy fell from the rooftop while running after a snapped kite. Another such incident happened with a 12-year-old, Masoom who was hit by a vehicle while he was chasing after a snapped kite. He now has a broken leg and will be in plaster for more than 20 days.

Similar incidents were reported from Hyderabad where kite-flying took two lives and left one critically injured in Hyderabad.

Two died while riding a bike and bicycle

In Gujarat, three people, including a child, were killed after their throats got slit by kite strings. An eight-year-old Tehjeeb Khan died in a civil hospital after he was rushed with several neck injuries. The News18 reported that the police have said that the boy was cycling when a kite string slit his throat. Similarly, Ashok Panchal (45) met with the same fate, as his throat was slit while riding a motorcycle. Another person who got an injury on his neck on January 12, 2019, later died on January 13, 2019. News18 reported that GVK-EMRI, ambulance service provider in the statement said around 59 people were injured due to kite strings in Ahmedabad. Near about 117 persons fell from rooftops while flying kites in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot.

Birds in distress

Not only humans suffered, but Monday was also a busy day for bird rescuers, who roamed around the city to free birds entangled with kite strings, reported Mirror Now. To cut each other’s kite, kite flyers apply fine glass powders on the kite strings to make it sharper which is a threat to avian species like pigeons, macaques, fruit-bats. The birds fail to notice the fine glass-coated thread while taking a flight, which lets to severe injuries. In Mumbai, Ahinsa Charitable Trust, an NGO rescued 11 birds till Monday afternoon.

Not New

People getting killed due to kites is not something new, this happens every year and still, nothing has been done. Earlier in 2016, two kids were killed after a kite string (manjha) slit their throats. They had gone out for a drive with their parents for celebrating Independence Day, on the drive as they put their heads out the sunroof windows their heads got entangled in the kite string.

The Logical Indian requests all the citizens to avoid using glass coated kite thread on any occasion. Use the normal thread, and after the celebration remove the thread from the roads and places where it can hurt people.
