The 25-year-old whistle-blower who busted a major kidney racket in 2016, was found hanging at his residence in Diva, Mumbai on January 8. Sundar Singh Jadhav decomposed body was found hanging from the ceiling fan and the police said that no suicide note was found.

Jadhav was the key witness in the high-profile Hiranandani organ trafficking case which made several headlines at that time. The busting of the racket also led to the arrest of 14 people including the hospital’s CEO and five doctors, as reported by The Economic Times.

Jadhav was facing financial constraints

Kishor Pasalkar, a senior inspector from Mumbra police station told Mumbai Mirror that it cannot be said at this point that whether it is a suicide or something else. “We are awaiting the postmortem report. Prima facie it looks like he died two to three days ago. We have registered an Accidental Death Record and are investigating,” he added.

Jadhav lived in a one-room flat. He had set a pav-bhaji and vada pav store. He also did odd jobs, like that of a waiter to support himself. Jadhav hailed from Uttar Pradesh, moved to Mumbai in search of a job in 2008. He was the sole breadwinner and his two younger brothers were dependent on him and one of whom was mentally unstable, reported The Wire.

The police also said that he was also having troubles with his wife. His wife had left for Uttar Pradesh with their son.

Kidney racket

Jadhav was duped into giving up his kidney to a Delhi-based woman in 2016. He was promised Rs 5 lakh in return by the agent. Since as per Indian organ donation law, only relatives can donate organs and it also prohibits the exchange of money, Jadhav posed as the woman’s brother. After he gave his kidney, he was not paid in full. It was then that he dug deeper into this scam. This led him all the way to the prestigious Hiranandani hospital in Mumbai.

The organ transplant scam came in open on July 14, 2016. A team from the Powai Police Station barged into an operation theatre of the Hiranandani hospital where a kidney transplant was going on. The police got a tip-off from an activist that the recipient and the donor were not related. The activist, in turn, was alerted by Jadhav who had documents to prove doctor-agent nexus. He reportedly received threat calls and lived under constant fear. His health too suffered.
