Delhi based architect Archana Gupta was fatally injured by celebratory gunshots which were fired at an ex-JDU MLA’s party on New Year’s Eve. She was declared to be brain dead on January 2. However, the family of the deceased architect, in a heartwarming gesture, which also showed strength, decided to donate her kidneys.

What had happened?

Meanwhile, Raju Singh, who is a former JDU MLA from Bihar has been arrested in connection to the case and was taken to the AIIMS hospital for medical tests, reported NDTV. Gupta, 42, was in a critical state when she was brought in and was on life support at the Fortis hospital in Vasant Kunj. The doctors consulted with the family for exploring the possibilities of donating her organs, to which the family agreed.

According to NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation), once a patient has been declared dead, the doctors can approach the deceased’s family for organ donation.

The hospital said in a statement, “Her family, displaying enormous strength and grit in their hour of grief decided to donate her kidneys. A no-objection certificate was obtained from the Delhi Police since this is a medico-legal case.”

In his formal complaint, Gupta’s husband said that they were at the farmhouse on Monday night to celebrate the New Year and right around midnight, a few rounds were fired by Singh. “Around 12 am, Archana, my daughter and I hugged and wished each other and then Archana went back to the dance floor… After five minutes again shots were fired by Raju Singh and I suddenly noticed that Archana fell down and I rushed towards her. She had blood on her face,” he wrote in the FIR. He further said that he knew Raju Singh for 25 years.

According to Hindustan Times, the police have mentioned in the FIR that the speakers from the dance floor had been removed and the blood had been washed away. They had even asked at least 20 witnesses to recreate the crime scene. The police intend to further question the daughter and the husband after the last rites are performed. Officials have said that the hospital staff informed the authorities about the incident.

Avnish Seth, Director of Fortis Organ Retrieval and Transplant, said that it is motivating to see the gradual shift in perception with regards to organ donation.  The Logical Indian community applauds the family for showing such strength and this gesture might just end up saving someone’s life.
