It seems as if the atrocities against Kashmiri Muslims in India has yet not come to an end as a 24-year-old Kashmiri youth was thrashed by a mob near Hindustan Aeronautics Limited headquarters in southeast Bengaluru on March 20.

The victim, 24-year-old Absar Zahoor Dhar, who is a civil engineering student, suffered serious injuries to his head, hands and face. A student of CMRIT college freelanced as a part-time model to self-fund his college education. Journalist Fawad Shah reported the incident on his Twitter handle and said that Absar did not have any idea as to why he was attacked in the first place.

The tweet read, “Absar Zahoor Dhar, 24-yr-old Kashmiri student, has been beaten up in Bengaluru. Dhar, who funds his studies by modelling, says, “They could have killed me. I’m living in fear, not attending college as the assailants roam free in front of my house as if nothing happened.”

A case was registered at the HAL police station and based on that, the HAL police officials arrested four men, identified as Nithin (25), Manjesh (21), Gautham (26), and Abhi alias Santhosh (20). All the culprits are residents of Kundalahalli Colony.

Six days after the incident, Absar wrote on Facebook:

• I am grateful to all who have shown their care and concern after the gruesome act that i was subjected to a few days…

Reportedly, the issue spiralled after March 19 when Nithin, one of the culprits, accused Absar of eve-teasing while he was at a cafe near his college. After Absar refused the claim, Nithin and his group of friends warned him and left. The attack on Absar took place the next day in front of an ice-cream parlour where the group came and assaulted Absar with rods. Absar’s friends rescued him and took him to a nearby hospital after the attack.

As all the four accused are out of bail, Absar has been living in fear. Deccan Herald reported him as saying, “I am living in fear and not attending college as the assailants roam free in front of my house as if nothing has happened.”

While the reason for the attack has not yet been ascertained, the nature of the attack was gruesome. After the dastardly Pulwama attack, Kashmiri youths and students have been targeted and assaulted in different parts of the country. Kashmiri businessmen and vendors have also been attacked in the recent past.
