Gujarat: Students To Shout ‘Jai Hind’, ‘Jai Bharat’ While Responding To Attendance Call

With the New Year rolling in, students in Gujarat will have to respond to roll calls during attendance in a new way. A notification has been issued to Gujarat schools on December 31 that from January 1, students would have to respond to roll call by saying ‘Jai Hind’ or ‘Jai Bharat’.

This has been done to foster patriotism among children from a very young age. The notification has been issued by Directorate of Primary Education and Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB). It says that students from Class I to XII of government schools, grant-in-aid, and self-financed schools will have to follow this.

“In order to instil nationalism from a young age, it is directed that students of all schools, government, grant-in-aid as well as private, should say ‘Jai Bharat’ or ‘Jai Hind’, instead of ‘Yes sir’ or ‘Present sir’ across the state from January 1, 2019. Ensure this is followed across all schools,” the circular states, reported The Indian Express.

The copies of the notification were sent to district officials with instruction to implement the rule from the new year. This has been done after taking inspiration from a Rajasthan-based history teacher, Sandeep Joshi, who was honoured by RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on December 29 in Gujarat for making his students do the same.

Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said: “There is nothing bad in taking inspiration from such a good initiative. This was followed in Gujarat decades ago but somewhere down the line, it was forgotten.”

The Logical Indian take

There are many ways to instil patriotic feelings in a person. The moment a citizen of a country sees their nation a progressive, secular, independent one, they would anyway start loving their country more.

The country needs development, it needs a strong and robust judiciary system, unbiased media and a government who walks the talk. Making students say ‘Jai Bharat’ cannot make them patriotic. It is high time the government looks at themselves and in improving their functioning than bringing in these silly rules in the name of patriotism.
