An IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh, who had booked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, then the Gorakhpur MP, under the National Security Act (NSA) in 2002 has been suspended after he gave an interview to an English website, reported The Hindu. The 1992-batch IPS officer, Jasvir Singh in the interview explained how he had been sidelined after he booked the MP.  He was posted as Additional Director General (ADG) with rules and manuals department of the Uttar Pradesh Police and has been suspended for violating service rules by making remarks while giving an interview, reported The Indian Express. The exact reason for the suspension is yet to be known. The UP Police website exhibited that Mr Singh was suspended on February 14. Under his current post section, it states “ADG under suspension”

What has happened?

In 2002, Jasvir Singh became the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Maharajganj district in eastern Uttar Pradesh. He was 34-yr-old back then and booked a case for preventive detention against the sitting MP, Yogi Adityanath. In an interview with Huffington Post, he said that despite pressure from politicians of the BJP, who were in power at the centre, and the Bahujan Samaj Party as the state government, he refused to withdraw his case for preventive detention. Two days after he booked the MP, he was transferred to the Food Cell of the UP police. Singh just after a year of booking Adityanath, accused Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya, who was then food minister in the Mulayam Singh Yadav government of corruption in connection to Lakhimpur Kheri food scam. After the event, he was transferred out of the Food Cell of the UP police, reported the Huffington Post.

Of 26 Years Service, 6 years involved actual police work

It is sad that an IPS officer of such calibre in his 26 years of service was only involved in actual police work for six years, and spent the rest 20 years in dead-end postings. While stressing on his ordeal over the years, he said that he has been treated as an outcast because he was not ready to bend according to the will of the politicians. He also said that he paid the price for trying to catch hold of a powerful person. Raising concerns on the current situation of the Uttar Pradesh state, he said that politicians demand loyalty from cops, however, this is unconstitutional. He further said one should not hold themselves back in questioning these politicians. In the article, he said that he was detested by his superiors, shunned by his colleagues and has been marked as a troublemaker.
