In Hyderabad, the month of February saw a significant rise in cases registered by Hyderabad traffic police for drunk drinking, reported The News Minute. A total of 2,972 cases were registered. Of this figure, 755 people were arrested and were put behind bars for 90 days and 25 people’s driving licenses were permanently cancelled. The police suspect that the easy availability of liquor and increase in people’s capacity to purchase is one primary reason that is resulting in such a setback.

After the Hyderabad Police dealt with a plethora of such drunk driving cases on the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day, they increased their vigil and deployed more teams for routine checks. On these two days, around 1,594 cases were registered. KPV Raju, Inspector, Traffic Admin when asked about routine checks, he said that till last year, the traffic police used to conduct checks only on Friday and Saturday nights. However, after the New Year, the traffic police have increased the ante and our teams, both static and mobile. He further said that from now on we do routine checks even on weekdays.

Blood alcohol content helps cops to arrest drunk drivers

What is befuddling is the fact that after so much of awareness campaign undertaken by the traffic police in the last few months, the numbers of the cases did not plummet. The officer further said that on the basis of the alcohol level in the blood, the punishment is awarded. Explaining it further he said that they are only authorised to register a case against a driver if they find that the blood alcohol content is higher than 30mg/dl. However, he said they let them go up to 35mg/dl and then register a case. Emphasising on the number of licenses permanently cancelled, Raju said that 25 peoples’ driving licenses were revoked as they were caught second or third time committing the same offence, whereas driving licenses of 154 were temporarily cancelled for 3-6 months.

Areas were such cases were registered

Cops said that the majority of people were caught drunk driving were aged from 20 to 35. He also noted that most numbers of cases were reported from Medhipatnam. Areas like Jubilee Hils, Begumpet and Banjara Hills too saw a proliferation in such cases. All the 2,972 violators were produced in the third and fourth metropolitan magistrate courts in Nampally. All the 775 arrested were taken to Chanchalguda jail. Three violators were charged with imprisonment for dangerous driving and violation of traffic rules. Of the remaining, an amount of Rs 2,500 and cases under section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act were slammed against them.

The Logical Indian Take

We ask people to be more responsible as drinking and driving should not be considered as an act of bravery or show off. One should always know that drinking and then driving increases the chance of road accidents. Any sound person will not try to commit this imbecile act. One should think about their families and close friends before laying their hands on a steering wheel or a handle of a bike. We ask all our readers to be safe and careful.
