Almost a month after residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur’s Bajheda Khurd village thrashed two men on suspicion of cow slaughter, Samiuddin, one of the victims who survived the mob is still waiting for justice. Qasim, the other victim was lynched by the mob.

There were irregularities in the police reports initially. While the police claimed that the horrific incident took place due to a misunderstanding over a motorbike accident, videos that surfaced showed that it was because of cow slaughter.

When The Logical Indian contacted ASP Ram Mohan Singh during the time when the incident happened, he said that “We are waiting for the injured person to complete his treatment and be well enough to talk to us. Only then we can go ahead with the investigation.”

Now a month later, the 64-year-old farmer from the Muslim-majority Madapur village is better, and is in a position to speak. But alas, his statement has not even been recorded yet.

Nobody came to record the statement

“They (the police) haven’t even come to speak to me yet. They never asked me what happened. People have been let out on bail. I can recognise the people who attacked me. But nobody ever asked me all this while,” said Samaydeen, both his arms covered by plasters, and one leg in a cast, in addition to several bandages and stitches all over his body, reported The Wire.

On Saturday, July 14, Samiuddin sent a detailed report to Uttar Pradesh police officials narrating the entire incident from the first person perspective and demanded an unbiased investigation. In a conference in Delhi, where he met a few reporters, the Scroll reported him as saying,

“I was in my field smoking a bidi with my neighbour, Hasan,” Samiuddin said, pressing his hands to the chest to ease a bout of coughing. “We were there to fetch fodder for our cattle. It was around 11.30 am when we spotted a group of 10-15 men assaulting Qasim, whom we had seen a few minutes before walking towards the fields. There was no cow, no motorbike or any vehicle there.”

He says that when he went and enquired about the incident, the mob said ‘tu ruk mulle, tujhe bhi dekhte hain’ (You stay right there, you are next).” Samiuddin said that he does not know much about Qasim but knew that he was a cattle trader.

“Now that I have spoken the truth about what happened that day, I fear for my and my family’s well-being. I feel the people in that mob and the police from Pilkhuwa police station will come after me and my family,” he fears.

When The Logical Indian tried to contact ASP Ram Mohan Singh again, he said he was busy and could not talk to us regarding Hapur lynching.

Accused got bail

Yudhishthir Sisodia, the main accused in the case has been granted bail a few days ago. Although IPC Sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) were registered against him and the four other accused. Even though two videos of the lynching is available, the district court says that the FIR and the police case diary does not hold a strong case against Yudhishthir. Another accused awaits bail hearing on July 19.
