Haryana Police Recommends Rape & Murder Convict Ram Rahim For Parole Citing ‘Good Behaviour’

The Sirsa Police has recommended parole for Dera Sacha Sauda chief Ram Rahim Singh. Singh’s behaviour in the jail has been ‘good’, says jail superintendent of the Sirsa Police, in his letter to the Sirsa district administration seeking their opinion on the same. Several leaders in the state government have supported the request for parole. Earlier, Chandigarh High Court rejected Ram Rahim’s parole saying that it would create a law and order problem.

Singh had filed a 42-day parole request to do farming. In August 2017, he was convicted of raping two women. And in January 2019, he along with three other men were sentenced to life term for the murder of a journalist, 16 years back.

‘Good Behaviour In Prison’

Jail Superintendent of the Rohtak district in his letter to the district administration said that Singh’s behaviour in the jail has been good and that he has not violated any rules. He also added that he is not a ‘hardcore criminal’ and has not committed any crime in prison. As per experts, the term hardcore criminals refer mainly to people with a long criminal history.

The Sirsa district administration has been asked to submit a report to the commissioner of Rohtak division with a copy marked to the jail superintendent.

Dr Arun Singh, the Sirsa Superintendent of Police has said that they are yet to submit a report to the deputy commissioner. Speaking to Deccan Herald he said, “The report will be prepared to take into account the merits and demerits of the parole if granted. On a routine basis, we prepare reports in parole applications based on merits and demerits of each case.”

Incidentally, a few Haryana government leaders are backing the parole request. Haryana Jail Minister KL Panwar said, “He has applied for parole, which he is entitled to. There is a procedure involved. The Sirse police will prepare its report and submit it to the deputy commissioner.”

The state Health Minister Anil Vij said that there was nothing wrong in giving parole even though he has been convicted.
