In yet another incident which highlights the problem of job crunch in India, when the Maharashtra secretariat Mantralaya opened up 13 vacancies for waiters in its canteen, as many as 7,000 candidates applied for the position, which requires only class 4 passed candidates to qualify. Reportedly, most of the candidates are college graduates, revealed a government official.

What the opposition had to say

The government official informed that recently, a 100-mark written examination was conducted for the post. “The exam formalities got completed on December 31 and currently the joining process is on. Out of the 13 selected applicants, eight are men and the rest women,” he has informed.

Slamming the state as well as the central BJP party, Nationalist Congress Party leader Nawab Malik said that it was the BJP’s “failure” to generate adequate employment opportunities for the youths in the state. NDTV reported him as saying that the situation in Maharashtra is a full-blown crisis and that no new project or industries are coming up in the western state.

The leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde also slammed the state government and said that the government should be ashamed of employing the services of such educated individuals. “It is unfortunate graduates were selected for the posts when the eligibility criteria were Class 4 pass,” he said, reported The Indian Express. He also asked as to how ministers and secretariates would feel while getting served by double graduates.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said that the government cannot stop people from applying for posts and that adequate jobs have been added in Maharashtra. However, according to NDTV, the employment statistics do not support the minister’s claims.

Job Crisis in India

According to data, the number of unemployed in the state grew from 33.56 lakh in 2016 to 42.2 lakh this year while the number of people getting gainful employment sank down to 17,000 within those two years.

However, this is not an isolated incident as over the years a number of incidents have popped up where highly qualified individuals have applied for jobs of peons and lower rank government officials.

During his campaigning for the 2014 general elections, PM Modi had promised that if elected, their government would create 10 million new jobs every year.

The Economic Survey of 2016-17 shows the increase in the unemployment rate in the country from 4.9% in 2013-14 to 5%, with a decline of about 20,000 jobs by 2016. According to Quartz India, there are about 17 million people entering the workforce every year, but only 5.5 million jobs are being created for them.

The Logical Indian take

Such a high number of applicants for government posts is simply due to the job security offered by them. It is a monumental waste of the country’s resources to have such extremely qualified individuals being reduced to apply for low-level jobs. The leaders of the country need to stop hiding behind numbers and admit the ground level scenario of unemployment in the country.
