Indian Prime Minister- Narendra Modi travels a lot.
Wherever the PM goes to a city, hashtag welcoming Modi starts trending on Twitter. However, in a sharp contradiction #GoBackModi is the top trending hashtag whenever he steps in any southern state.
On September 30, the hashtag #GoBackModi was trending at the top on Twitter in India with 99,000 tweets as PM Modi landed in Chennai. He came to Chennai to speak at the convocation ceremony at IIT-Madras. To counter, the #GoBackModi hashtag, BJP supporters started tweeting with #TNWelcomesModi. However, the trend failed to make an impact.
After arriving in Tamil Nadu, PM Modi said that he spoke in Tamil in the US. “During my visit to the United States of America, I told the world that Tamil is one of the world’s oldest languages, so even today, the language is being resonated across the United States,” the Prime Minister said.
However, the statement hardly made an impact on Tamilians as they protested, just like every time, when the Prime Minister visited the state.
In April 2018, opposition parties and pro-Tamil activists made #GoBackModi viral on Twitter when Modi arrived in the state to inaugurate the DefExpo arms exhibition. The protesters also released black balloons.
In January this year, #GoBackModi again trended at the top, as PM Modi arrived in Tamil Nadu to lay the foundation stone of AIIMS campus in Madurai.
Here are some of the tweets that are trending on social media;
