For Cancelling Tickets Without Notice, GoAir Asked To Pay Over Rs 98,000 To Mumbai Resident

Low-cost carrier GoAir was directed last week by the consumer forum to pay more than Rs 98,000 to a Vile Parle resident in compensation for cancelling 25 of his tickets “without reason”. Apparently, the man had booked all these tickets for guests in 2015 to travel from Ahmedabad to Mumbai to attend his daughter’s wedding.

When contacted, GoAir refused to comment and claimed that the verdict was already out in the case, reported Hindustan Times.


The incident

“I had made the wedding pooja arrangements based on the flight timings. In January 2015, I contacted the airlines to submit the passengers’ names. They, then, informed me the flight was cancelled. They offered no reasons,”  the man, Jayesh Pandya, said. In 2014, he had paid Rs 50,000 for the 25 tickets to fly his guests to Mumbai in 2015.

Following the mishap, Pandya had to buy tickets worth Rs 88,816 for 24 of his guests for another airline.

Seeking reimbursement for the money he spent, he wrote to Go Air twice in February 2015, but ended up being given Rs 3,000-worth credit voucher. Further, he was told that his refund was being processed, but did not hear from GoAir anymore.


GoAir’s false submission

Following this, an RTI query was filed by Pandya with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation regarding GoAir’s schedule change on February 17, 2015, but found that there was no change in the schedule. In November 2016, Pandya approached the forum.

However, the forum was told by GoAir that the timings of the flight had been changed on September 6, 2014, as per the winter schedule of DCGA. The forum came to the conclusion that the airline was making a false submission when it noticed that the RTI response from DCGA did not match with what GoAir had to claim. The forum also noted that even though the airline claimed that they had sent an email to Pandya regarding the cancellation, they could not produce any proof. GoAir submitted some emails that they had sent regarding the refund in March 2015.

Finally, GoAir was asked by the forum to pay Pandya Rs 50,000 for the tickets, Rs 38,816 for the excess amount Pandya had to pay to Vistara airlines and as additional compensation, they were asked to pay him Rs 10,000.
